Draft at Duckworth’s in Mooresville last night. Pours black. Thin mouthfeel, some roastiness in the flavor but generally lacking the complex malts it needed. Not an awful beer, just missed the style by a lot.

On tap at Coasters in Elizabeth City. Pours dark brown with a creamy off-white head. Barely there aroma but hints of chocolate do manage to peek through. The flavor is of chocolate, nuts, and light floral hops. More sweet than bitter but really well balanced. Overall, not a bad interpretation of the style.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 ChainGangGuy (3837) - Canton, Georgia, USA - NOV 2, 2010
Appearance: Transferred to me a body akin to dark cherry wood (LibrarianGirl confers) with a scant, white head and good clarity.
Smell: Sweet-smelling, malty nose with notes of caramel basted toast topped with chopped grapes and raisins and given a pinch of earthy nutmeg.
Taste: Soundly toasty Munich malts with a deep sweetness to it and soft touches of dark caramel. Just a hint of tangy-tasting Pils. Dark fruitiness leaning primarily towards a Concord grape character. Vague underlying spiciness. A lone drop of warmth from the alcohol on the finish, but it essentially finishes frutiy and still fairly sweet.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.
Drinkability: All the prototypical doppelbock tastes without the usually big helping of alcohol, provided all the calculations are correct, and, if that’s the case, I’m down for that.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 durhambeer (2096) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - OCT 14, 2010
On tap at Asheville Oktoberfest. Nose smells of dark, syrupy malts, caramel, and a bit of molasses. A hint of raisins. Not a lot of bread or creaminess. Thin palate. Not bad, but a bit weird for the style.
