3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 HoppityHop (151) - USA - JUN 3, 2007
Served directly from oak barrel, this had a citrusy nose, and was a copper color with a small light tan head. The smoky bourbon barrel flavor was very pronounced and the mouthfeel was a tad sticky. Overall, it had a nice flavor (in a boilermaker sort of way), but I think this one is more of a winter brew. Next time, I hope they try aging their very drinkable Porter in this same fashion.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 SpringsLicker (2546) - Tennessee, USA - FEB 12, 2012
Clear dark brown pour with a thin ring of foam for a head.
Smells like a bag of candy. Brown paper, molasses, some licorice, some vanilla and chocolate and maybe some mint too.. No hop aroma.
The flavor is complex and sweet and pretty much follows the aroma.
I don’t really pick up much character from the Bourbon, but perhaps it is subtle and is what is offering all of the complexities in the flavor. Caramel, dark dried fruits, molasses.
Pretty tasty and I like that the Bourbon flavors are understated and balanced with the malts.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 hbmason (1052) - Shoreline, Washington, USA - APR 17, 2011
On cask at the brewery. It was nice to try this one. The American Ale really went well in the barrell. It was a nice change from stouts and sours in the barrells.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 hophead75 (2005) - Largo, Florida, USA - JUN 3, 2007
on cask at the brewery party 06.02.07 Lightly hazy amber in color with a small bubby head. Aroma: caramel, floral and citrus hops, notes of berries/dark fruit, wood and bourbon. Taste- pretty much the same as American ale with a good dose of bourbon and wood. Bourbon and oak is alittle too strong for this beer, as I expected it would be. Still, an interesting experiment.
