On tap at Ledo. Pours a dark brown with light passing easily. Beige head fades quickly and leaves little lacing. Aroma is mild, bread, lightly toasted malt, yeast, and overall sweet. Flavor is mild and sweet, not similar to a Tripel. Malt, bread and slight spice complexity typical of homebrew.

Kind of a random experiment. Certainly no tripel. Pours black with good head and lacing. Some floral yeast here and some light roast. Some sweetness in finish. Tap at Black Squirrel.

Keg @ Black Squirrel. Deep brown, small head. Roasted apple and marzipan nutty sweetness. Strong fruity esters. Very sweet flavors. Brown sugar. Banana and apple. Cocoa. Pretty oily, full. Not my thing.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft. Poured deep nearly black brown with a thick brown head that settled to a film. Aroma of chocolate, licorice, dark fruits, sugar. Taste is dark roasted coffee, plums, light licorice bitterness. The roasted malt really balances the typical tripel sweetness. Smooth and slightly creamy, very drinkable. Really a pleasant surprise.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at the source. Poured a nearly pitch black color, with a small off-white head. Aroma was notes of light chocolate, some licorice, dried fruits. Flavor was roasted malts, with dried fruit, character of dried cherries. I probably should have let this one warm a bit, as it got real interesting towards the end. Alcohol almost completely hidden - I’ll check this one out again real soon if I can snag some of it around the area.

32oz growler I picked up at Whole Foods in Falls Church. Pours an opaque black with some foamy, brown head. Nose has a lot of molasses, toast, some earth, cocoa nibs, licorice, some umami, some dried fruit, raisins, currants. Flavor has some soy, roasted mushroom, a flick of smoke, molasses, licorice, toast, some mild fruit, a little dried blueberry, some cherry, some raisin, caramel. Full bodied, dry finish. Very interesting.

Nice full bodied beer that’s not too heavy. Had sort of a dark fruit flavor without being sweet. A good sipping beer
