Pours a nice mahogany color, tannish head. What a cool beer. Think herbs, thanksgiving, potpourri, light tartness, funk, squash...I really enjoyed this. I can see how some didnít, but it was fun and quite tasty.

Bottle. Cloudy gold with a small beige head. Aromas of cinnamon, clove, squash, syrup, and light funk. Flavor is cinnamon, maple syrup, squash, clove, oak and funk. Medium bodied, smooth with a dry end. Lingering cinnamon and clove.

Ernest (6258) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - OCT 14, 2014
Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), with notes of Vicks VapoRub and other medicinal ointments/balms, nutmeg, apple, plastic, clove, sage. Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately to heavily acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately to heavily acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly astringent. Iíd pretty much written off this brewery a while ago, but enough time has passed that I figured Iíd see if things had improved (a folly idea, perhaps, given that sour ales sell so well regardless of quality; there is little incentive or perceived need for improvement in this genre). Unfortunately this is a really unpleasant beer, more so than most Iíve had from this brewery, mostly owed to the medicinal herbs used, which completely overpower the nose. It doesnít smell remotely like something you would eat or drink, but rather something youíd wipe on a rash or infection to ease burning discomfort. And Iím not exaggerating at all about that. In the mouth itís the usual high-acid, overattenuated, stark, watery, thin experience that has plagued Fantome and Jolly Pumpkin in the last several years. Unpleasant bacteria run amok, and seemingly nothing they can do (or want to do) about it anymore. Sad.

TheAlum (5833) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - OCT 12, 2014
Draft on tap at The Source (Denver, CO). Pours a deeper glowing orange hue, gentle haziness with richer frothy head that shows a nice thicker ring with solid lacing. Aromas are tart and potent, some nice orange and bitter citrus rind. Touches of juice, earth, mellow sweetness shows a bit of farmhouse yeast, lacto and yogurt. Touches of bread, gentle touch of carmelized malts. Initial is sour and lactic, twangy dry sour feel with yogurt, some firm sourness, citric and yogurty, acidic qualities grow with a gentle carmelized feel, orange and faint cranberry. Backend is sour, dry, firmly lactic with some nice orange and lemon, touch of cranberry. Faint oak, nice, a bit darker but still lively and sour. Finish is dry, sour. Nice. Looks great.

Dogbrick (8237) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - OCT 10, 2014
Sample at The Source. Slightly hazy yellow-gold color with a medium bright white head that diminishes steadily to a film. Short strings of lacing. Potpourri aroma with notes of fruit and yeast. Medium-bodied with flavors of tart citrus, herbal yeast and malt. The finish is a blend of spices and herbs with a touch of fruit in the aftertaste. Above average overall.

On tap at The Source. Golden-orange and cloudy appearance with a white head. Aroma and flavor of potpourri, peppery spice, herbs, pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, floral notes, tart fruits and light earthy notes. Interesting version of Surette.

jredmond (5458) - Manhattan, New York, USA - OCT 6, 2014
Draft at Crooked Stave - The Source - with Andrew. Pours a bright golden body with light haze and fine white lacing. Aroma is funky, wheat, brett and lemon funk. Mouthfeel is medium with notes of tart wheat, sourdough, sour fruit, light citrus - mostly lemon and brett. I didnít really get any of the flavors "autumn" usually implies, i.e. pumpkin, squash, yam, clove, nutmeg, etc; but I consider this a good thing. Another great sour ale from Crooked Stave.

Orange pour with little head. Rubber and citrus aroma. Very dry. Tart like a tart candy with none of the sweetness. Little horseblanket and not true to the style while still excellent.

arminjewell (6293) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JUN 7, 2013
Pour on tap at the brewery, hazy orange pour with white head, aroma brought notes of vanilla, sour fruits, nice pumpkin, spice notes with some slight cinnamon, clove, ginger notes, touch of nice funk and grass notes in there as well. Taste is a mix of red fruits, some sour lemon, hints of oak, funk, grass mixing into pumpkin, spice in there, finishing fairly tart, bitter.
