4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
February 2nd, 2013 - Moving on from the Nightmare on Brett series is L’Brett D’or, a beautiful, Gaullic sounding sour. My review begins like this: "Wow! WOW!" It’s rare for me to put emotional injections into my notes, so this is a testament to the powerful initial impression this beer makes. The nose is pungent with a hyper-sour yawp, and ululations of tangerine, jasmine, honeysuckle and fresh leather. Notably, this is the best leather note I’ve ever experienced, almost edible in its presentation (which is a very strange thought.) The flavor brings some nutmeg and egg nog to the mix, layered on top of the sweet-sour notes I know and love from good Flemish sour ales. With much sucking and sighing I try to track what brews this reminds me of, and I conjure up the image of a mildly aged La Folie, but more complex and refined, and that’s a remarkable feat. This makes Crooked Stave memorable to me, and puts it up on a pedestal on the first go. I only fear that everything else will have the same epiphany, crowding out Stave’s small bar. They deserve the accolades and business.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
330 ml bottle, kindly shared by kraddel. Pours hazy yellow with a quickly dissapating head. Aroma is overwhelmingly citus, but very nice citrus aroma’s, close to gueuze citrus notes, some wheat. Medium body and a taster that is subtlely referring to elderberry.

Bottle thnx to Experiment_ale !
Pours unclear blonde , small white head . Smell is sour , grainy , citrussy , some brett .
Taste is sour, funky ( not the average brett-tastes ) bit dry . Certainly not bad, but I do not get the hype of this brewery ...

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Batch 2. Pretty clear gold. Excellent nose of pineapple brett, light funk, maybe light oak. Quite tart, lot of brett character, some red clay earth, light cobwebs. Another of those ones from CS that leaves me scratching my head over the hype.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared by sloth. Pour was hazy orangey straw, decent carbonation/head. The aroma was severe lemony tartness, leather, faint rubber. The flavor was intensely tart, sour lemons, funk, light fruits (peaches). Mouhtfeel was light and refreshing, yet harshly acidic. Dare I say Cantillon-like? Thanks again, Bert, great fun!
