3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TheAlum (4359) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - JUN 2, 2013
Silver waxed 375 ml bottle from my Crooked Stave 2012 Membership. Thanks for being a great trustee, Lenin and Stalin Cates. Pours a deeper darker golden amber hue, touches of darkness in the middle and body, touch more orange golden glow on the edges. Frothy whitish head atop dies to a ring, laces small. Nice color. Aromas are firmer fruit, zippy citrus meets some gentle farmstand berry, big bretty pineapple, lemons and gentle lime, grapefruit and some honeydew melon. Firm lactic acidity grows, yogurt and citrusy, zippy sourness. Touches of bread, straw, richer neutral oak. Gentle tannic quality, bigger barnyard brett and funk as it warms more. Potent fruity sour nose, straw and faint yet growing estery fruit. Yogurt, bread, and barnyard. Initial is decent sour fruit, citrusy and crab apple. Touches of pear, firm to bigger yogurty lactic presence. Lemony zip, big yogurt, and some decent oakiness. Sour melon, apple, bigger citrus. Lots of yogurt. Middle shows the bready and malt element, the bretty funk, cobwebs start to creep in with a good yeasty funk. Backend keeps the sour and firmer citrusy acidity back into the fold, lemons, grapefruit, lime, and a bit of brash acidity in mellow layers. The fruit, brett, yogurt, and oak stay focused though. Very nice, with lots of pineapple, pear, apple, and good citrus. Really good fruity melange, complex bretty pineapple. Some funk, dryness, firm yet not overwhelming acidity. Big pineapple character throughout. Nice one. The beer itself it pretty damn good though. Rich fruit, sourness, good complexity. Nice sour with a strong inviting fruit presence, good complexity.

A the Local Beer bar in a bottle. Came in the glass a hazy orange with a nice white head Nose is powerful with tropical fruits of all kinds. I get mango, pineapple, grapefruit. Even some peach, apricot, and apple. Medium plus in body with an mouthfeel with attitude. The flavor is full of all the tropical and non tropical fruits and the sourness is intense. Finish is really perfect sourness. Really good.

375ml bottle, thanks Aaron! Pours a clear, golden amber color with a thin white head and some lacing. Aroma is funky, Brett, fruity, lemon. Medium on the palate with soft, creamy carbonation. Flavor is sour, funky, Brett, oak, lemon, a little vinegar, with a clean sour finish. A little heartburn. Very nice. Reminiscent of the Gueuzes.

Bottle received in a trade, nice amber colored pour with a thin white head. Aroma of yeast funk, lemon and other light fruits. Taste is a big funk with a growing acidic light fruit flavor, really dig this.

Backlogged rating: Slightly hazy rich coppery hue with a good frothy head and lace. The aroma has tons of tropical fruits and some earthy esters. Plenty of Acetobacter sourness and some Brettanomyces funk with a grainy and herbal quality. The taste is moderately sour’d, lightly funky and very fruity, so much so with the fruity notes I would almost call this a fruit beer with the strawberry, apricot, banana, and mango overtones. Herbal and earthy finish with a bit of oak and mineral water. The mouth feel is very lively (almost too much) and refreshing with a sudden bone dry finish. Overall I liked this but honestly do not think it is all that.

Silver waxed small bottle via trade. Pours a moderate copper color with a small lacing white head. Aroma is funky, tart acidic notes, lemon, leather, basement, brett. Taste is much the same, tart acidity, leather, basement, funky sourness and maybe a touch of some vinous almost wine notes in there. Solid.

Green Wax 2012 bottle. Pours with a hazed orange gold and a large white head that slowly fades. Aromas are of a slightly young Brett character, tons of tropical fruit (pineapple, guava), grassy hops, fanta soda and sun tan lotion. Grainy malt character, slightly catty, complex funk with strawberry and barnyard. A touch messy, but not bad. Flavors are quite sour, with tropical fruit, but a strong young Brett Cheerio character with a bit of diacetyl (so despite the dry hops, I’m going to sit on my other bottle for a while). Great acidity, nice pineapple esters, very juicy, nice grassy dry hop. Tangerine and peaches. Medium high carbonation, tannic finish, mouth puckering. Good, but needs a bit of time to clean up to become great (worth waiting 4-6months).

Dry Hopped L’Brett d’Or: 375ml bottle split into a mini Firestone Walker snifter. Stuck my nose in bottle and smelled the awesome tropical fruit and wood. Pours out golden orange with bubbles going around the edges and very little retention. Big aromas of sour apples, pears and some cantaloupe coming though along with a refreshing hint of brett, wood and spice. Taste is largely acidic at first, with juicy tropical fruit on the finish with medium to light carbonation. Lingering taste of wood and pulp. The taste seems rather sweet throuhgout the finish. Doesn’t seem like a whole lot of diacetyl that I heard people complain about. Over all a really nice, sweet, fruity and funky beer.

375ml bottle $11.49. Dark orange color, good lace but not much head. Aroma is hints of sour beer, apples, not bad at all. Flavor is good, slightly sour, slightly sweet, apples, not much wood influence here. Mouthfeel was fine but overall I was a little disappointed by this. Its too bad to see them switch to a smaller bottle and charge almost as much as the 750ml. For $11.49 I can spend the extra fifty cents and get Supplication instead which is what I will be doing from now on. I was just starting to get a taste for Crooked Stave but they are overpriced plain and simple.
