3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from the Cellar Reserve. Thanks to Bill for the assist. Served in Crooked Stave stemware.
Pours dark brown with a quickly-diminishing tan head that quickly fades to a thin collar and few swirls for a cap. The nose is more spirit heavy than the other two variants of the base. Bourbon presence is fairly heavy with some oak and light chocolate in the background. Vanilla as well. As it warms, there is a light dark fruit character along with a bit of roast.
The flavor is pretty barrel heavy as well, though it is more oak coming to the frot with some tannin. Bourbon is in the background along with slight roast, and just a bit of underlying acidity.
Medium body and fairly dry. Carbonation is a bit low, but appropriate for the style. Tannin through the finish.
My least favorite of the series, but still a nice beer stemming from a solid concept.

Bottle. From notes mid 2015. Nose is cherry, vanilla, whiskey - very balanced. Taste is bourbon, vanilla, sweet leading to tart, sour cherry, very bitter cherry finish with a little smoke with a lot of vinegar.

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Well done beer. Aroma and flavor are mildly tart, fruity, funky and have a nice hint of bourbon but not enough to dominate. Nice color and full, smooth palate. Does not disappoint.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Served in Teku from 375ml. Batch III, served fresh. Will review aged batch in 18-24mo.
Aroma – you can literally smell the sourness lingering off the surface of this brew. Damn, am I thrilled with this release…
Appearance – pours as dark as the midnight skies in Chapel Hill. Very limited, almost non-existent khaki head-retention.
Taste – near-perfected mouth feel, especially for style: mouth-puckering sourness/funk w/ a multitude of brilliant flavors, literally exploring all avenues of the taste spectrum in an audacious manner.
Palate – explosion of whiskey notes, wood, sour black cherries, possibly blackberries, subtle hints of vanilla, and mouth-puckering sourness on the finish.
Overall – great representation of style; a well-rounded brew. First impression: this brew reminds me of a perfected “Major Arcana.” The sourness really stands out. I think this brew could definitely use some time yet I am 100% content with a fresh bottle, too.

Nose is bourbon barrel with a touch of brett. Taste is also bourbon, with oak and a healthy dose of sour. Finishes super clean.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle... Pours murky and brown with no head. The aroma shares lots of toasted oak, cocoa, sour cherries and red wine. Light to medium-bodied with dancing carbonation. Mainly, the flavor furnishes caramel, sour cherries and black bread. Also, yeasty, roasty, acidic and acetic notes play nicely together. Finishes tart, and then caramely. 3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
February 2nd, 2013 - This is my first visit to Crooked Stave, which means it is a momentous occasion. I didn’t really "get" at the time how big Crooked Stave was, and how much bigger it was going to get in the following year, but I saw from first sip to last the quality and craftsmanship invested in each batch. Today’s tasting began with the Nightmare on Brett, bourbon variety. True to form, the aroma smells a lot like bourbon, but also a touch of spicy Mexican chocolate, and a richness familiar to, of all things, Elmer’s glue. The flavor has a nice, deep chocolatey base, and a deep, dark chunkiness, like the blocks of chocolate they put in good, quality ice cream. Also around the taste is a halo of bourbon and a hot alcoholic burn, demanding another chocolate sip as a chaser. As you can see, it’s a dangerous cycle, but a flavorful one.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle at Mikkeller & Friends, july 26th 2014. Dark brown body, with a small tanned head. Aroma of bourbon, pepper, roasted malt and funky yeast. A rather special and enjoyable combination. Taste of tart cherries, oak, vanilla, espresso, citrus fruits and raisins. Seems the taste wants to take every direction and it works really well! Lightly sweetened by chocolate in the aftertaste balancing the sourness a bit, this is really one to enjoy!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled. Poured deeper brown with a short-lived head. The aroma picked up lots of tangy, almost metallic bourbon with accents of coconut and fruity Brett.. it was kind of hard to get down to the toasty cocoa and brown malt, but it was there. The flavor found very sour vinegar and bourbon barrel on the tip of the tongue, with accents of funky fruit and a kiss of cherries.. sour bourbon barrel, cherries, and funk on the long finish. Medium-bodied with moderate (and ideal) carbonation on the palate.. bracingly sour, but the malt bill was tasty and it held up fairly well.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
This was the beer that got me to come to Brooklyn this fine day and it did not disappoint. Pours deep brown with lovely nose of dark fruits and some vinous notes. Tastes of funky Brett, oak, blackberries, tart cherries, some earth, wine residue, and bourbon. The bourbon is just right and not heavy handed. Great palate great beer, great to start NY beer week.
