Sample at Kurtkeller 011: Crooked Stave-tastic 01 on 05/02/2014. Pours a murky copper-brown color with a medium thin off-white head that dissipates steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of tart berries, caramel, oak and bourbon. Medium-bodied with vinous and cherry notes and oaky bourbon and caramel malt flavors. The finish is tart fruits and subtle bourbon. Good beer all around.

375ml bottle in a tulip. Pours very dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of sourness/tartness, dark malts, oak and whiskey, light chocolate, some vanilla, and dark fruits. Flavor a really cool blend of it all. Average texture. A very nice beer.

UPDATED: APR 25, 2014 Bottle: Deep mahogany body, a little murky & topped with a gray-tinted, flimsy head that falls apart quickly but leaves some decent, bubbly lacing behind. Aroma is similar to the "Nightmare on Brett Grand Cru" opened just before this... Dark fruit, currants, black cherry, noticeable tartness, though not as explicitly lacto-like. I get some more spice from this one; almost cinnamon like, mild vanillin, spicy oak. Very faint, sweet whiskey notes in the back-end. Taste is similar as well - more lacto sourness shows up on the palate with notes of cherry, currants, lemons, wood, a hint of vanilla, & a slight bit of wine-like boozy warmth leading into the dry finish. Another very nice sour beer from Crooked Stave... Very similar to the Nightmare on Brett beer aged in the same barrels.

Bottle @ The HUGE Tasting. Brown with a small head. The nose of balsamic vinegar. Cherry and blackberry reduction. The taste is mildly acetic. A bit of penny, mineral. Toasted bread. Slightly vinegary. Medium body, soft carbonation. Pretty solid.

Bottle. Pours a clear brown with paperthin beige head that dininishes to nothing. The aroma is a strong oak and dark fruits. Thin mouthfeel with a nice light tartness and oak with nice light sour finish. Really enjoyed this.

Pour is dark hazy brown with virtually no head. Nose is quite nutty, light roast, tart cherry, and a hint of butterscotch (doesn’t seem like diacetyl). Taste also has a fair bit of nuttiness, much more cherry but less tart and sour than the nose would have lead you to believe. Body is light, fairly dry, gentle carbonation. A touch of barrel comes in towards the finish with a subtle sourness. Whiskey doesn’t really make much of a presence.

callmemickey (2524) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 21, 2014
Dark mahogany colored body, no head, minimal lacing. Strong acetic notes, blackberry, oak, leather, caramelized sugars, not much whiskey character (other than the oak) until the beer really warmed up. Medium bodied, gentle carbonation, assertive acidity, sharp finish.

Pours dark brown with no head. Aroma of whiskey, oak, caramel, vanilla. Taste is smooth, slightly sweet, big on barrel. So nice. Great, sour and sweet balance.

Bottle at the not so small Friday shindig, big thanks to Leighton once again, 03/01/14. Lightly hazed chestnut brown with a moderate beige covering that clears to the edge and spotting. Nose is burnt sugars, dank straw, dark toffee, bitter dark fruits, musty wood, on the turn orange, light smoke. Taste comprises dank wood, bretty tones, barnyard, funk, tarte berry skins, musty wood, cobwebs, tarte fruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying closure with light acidity. Solid Flemish affair.
