This beer is my current project with countless hours spent conceptualizing the process and design behind Petite Sour. While this is the "table version" of our Farmhouse ale "Surette", the process is a blend of brewing techniques from farmhouse breweries which use to span from Northern Germany to Northern France. Drawing inspiration from Berliner-weisse, Gose, Farmhouse Wit and Saison, Petite Sour is a true farmhouse beer. For this rendition I used a mixed culture of lacto and Brett to ferment a portion of the beer giving a cleaner acidity compared to the previous spontaneous batch. This batch of Petite Sour was again fermented and aged in our oak foeder as a blend of two beers. 375, capped. Pours a cloudy bright medium golden amber with a loose white head that sticks around. Big candied lemon nose with hints of cotton candy. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Candied lemon and hints of cotton candy on the mid palate. Mild tart sweet finish.

Pours a very cloudy, murky golden yellow color with dark ripe banana hues and a half finger off-white head that quickly dissapears. Minimal spotty lacing. Musty, slightly funky aroma with a nice farmhouse/barnyard presence along with toasted oak, lactic funk and musty brett. Almost wheat/Berliner like with sourdough bread, citrus juice, wild yeast and a lactic cheese character. Lots of lemon citrus character and the lactic funk stands out more as it warns. Full bodied, especially for the style with a really nice balance of barrel, dry, musty brett, citrus acidity and lactic funk. Crisp and refreshing with lemon acidity nicely complimenting the dry, musty brett. Dry toasted oak carefully blended in, melding nicely and not overpowering the other notes. Nice carbonation/spritzer like with the lactic funk coming on strong in the back end with subtle cheesiness. Well balanced and easy to drink considering the complexity. I really enjoyed this one a lot.

23 oct 2025, bottle. Pink. Nose is faintly tart and a bit yeasty. Thin body and mildly fizzy. Tastes like smarties candy and faintly tart. Nice.

C’est une chouette bière et je me retrouve tout con lorsqu’il s’agit de décrire ma dégustation .. Avec les Sour/gueuze et autres, je vois bien qu’il y a des différences, mais les mots et le recul me manquent ... En tout cas, ça a l’avantage d’être léger ( moins plombant qu’une gros stout par exemple ) autant que parfumé tout en stimulant joyeusement les papilles.

The last of the original breed pulled from the cellar to celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary. Nice smooth blend of subtle complexity. From Chad’s early nomadic efforts at Funkwerks. We both agreed that there has been nothing tastier!

Bottle thanks to Tom. Pours a cloudy yellow with medium off white head that lasts. The aroma is stone fruit, wheat, funk, oak. Thin mouth, tart wheat, nice funk, clean, very nice.

Reddish to orange color with very light carbonation. Smell of musty oak and tart stone fruit. Flavor tart and fruity, great balance of the two. Saison like finish without the prick carbonation. Similar to a nice lambic.

Pours reddish orange with thin white head. Smell is pomegranate, yeast, spice and fruit. Taste is sweet pomegranate, then sours to a vinegar red wine taste. Medium body heavy carb.

February 2nd, 2013 - My visit to Crooked Stave is coming to a wistful end as I approach my last sampler glass: the Petite Sour. I’m unsure what makes this sour "small", but everything before it has been acidic, and tasted like a small miracle in a glass. The Petite Sour is much more buttery on the nose, and I suspect, uses Brett to achieve a farmyard smell. But imagine a farm setting in a misty, dewy morning, hauling shaggy, wet hay. That’s the first whiff of this sour, with follow-up smells of popcorn, cornbread and grits - several smells I’ve never encountered quite so strongly or elegantly in a beer before. The flavor goes in a completely different direction. The palate is noticeably thin, and first delivers a cleaner, sweeter taste of cereals, corn and pineapple...actually, lots and lots of pine apple and orange juice. So much so that the Petite Sour begins to taste like a sour and tangy piña colada. Odd to have such a tropical flavor in a gray, snow-laden city? Yes, but it’s another creative expression of Crooked Stave’s adventurous brewing. This doesn’t reach the same apogee of perfection as the Brett d’Or, but it’s fun, and well worth chasing for beer tasters on safari in our fine city of Denver.
