3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Lukaduke (1021) - Portland, Maine, USA - FEB 3, 2013
Pours a deep brown mahogany color with a touch of bubbles on the top. The nose has lots of deep roasted brown sugar, wet wood, nutty vanilla and some tart funk. The palate is a lot of the same... not really all coming together in harmony in my opinion. There are sour tart fruit parts that I enjoy and rich roasty nutty quad elements that are solid... but when they all come together Im left a bit disappointed and underwhelmed.

A murky mahogany pour with very little carbonation. A light balsamic and red wine vinegar aroma. A decent amount of bourbon and vanilla. Some caramel, currants, wood, and a hint of grass. Tastes a bit sweet up front with some vinegar and dark fruit tartness following. Lots of wood, vanilla, bourbon, and caramel notes.

375ml bottle courtesy of ablackshear. Pours a dark, reddish-brown color with no real head to speak of. Aroma is oaky, some vanilla, some bourbon, some dark fruits, cherry. Medium on the palate with little to no carbonation. Flavor is lightly sour, more dark fruit, raisin, plum, cherry, some vanilla, a lot of oak, with a dry, tart finish that lingers for a while. Pretty tasty. Loses a little without the carbonation I think.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 TheAlum (4295) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - DEC 4, 2012
375 ml bottle from my Crooked Stave Membership. Pours a richer murky brownish hue, small brownish rung atop dies to a ring and laces small. Aromas are oaky, gentle bourbon and vanilla, kiss of heat. Some spice, carmelization, gentle toffee and spice. Gentle sour edge, Bourbon gives a weird complexity. Initial is gentle grape and sour dark fruit, some lactic elements, twang, and oak. Carmelization, vanilla, and funk. Gentle sourness grows, a touch of twang. Middle is gentle spirit and vanilla, touches of grapes, dark fruit, caramel and carmelized malts. Backend shows sourness, a bit thin, but a firm sourness, nothing offensive. Solid, a bit more barrel presence. I liked it a touch more than Cognac.

Bottle. Aroma is sour fruit. Maybe some bourbon, but more caramel. The appearance is brown with little carbonation. The taste starts sour then gets a little sweeter, then finishes on a sour note. Very nice. The palate is tart. Overall, a great beer. Would buy any chance I got.

Bottle shared at Exira Beer Summit 2012. Thanks to adnielsen for sharing. Pours a brown color with minimal head. Bourbon, raisins, funk, plum aromas. Tart, bourbon, barnyard flavors. The strong flavors mixed with the tartness doesn’t do it for me.

Wasnt expecting to like this but it is great. Weak in teh smell, jsut some sourness but the flavor is unique. Sourness up front but a nice bourbonny flavor is in the middle along with rum-soaked smores. It is dry and woody thoughout with some tannins and a sour yogurty finish.

Served in Crooked Stave stemware. Pours a moderate cola brown color with no real head or lacing. The nose is a bit oxidized with some moderately-heavy oak character. Just a touch of bourbon along with dark fruits and acid. Flavor is fairly barrel heavy as well, with some backing acidity. Medium body. Low carbonation.
