St. Bretta is our 100% Brettanomyces Whitebier that was just released this week! Not only is St. Bretta an evolution of Wild Wild Brett Orange, but also it will be ever-changing depending on the fresh citrus available that season. For our spring release we decided to brew St. Bretta with fresh Minneola Tangelo. Each seasonal release of St. Bretta will have a diverse range of citrus fruit added to keep the beer fresh and exciting (the summer release was brewed with blood oranges)!

Draught at Falling Rock Tap Housein Denver, on April 9 2014.
I only wrote down Crooked Stave St. Bretta, and on the online tap list for the Saison Night that wasn’t on there, taking a shot it was the spring version.
Acidic, to sour taste. Cloudy apricot color, small white head. Fizzy mouthfeel, low bitterness. Funky aftertaste. Acidic, funky, stable scent.

Draft at Jake’s Brew Bar in Littleton, CO. Pours a hazy orange color. Light, citrus aroma with a hint of maltiness. Light, sour taste. Some citrus in the background. Amazing balance. My first Crooked Stave brew and I am a huge fan!

Tap at the source. Pours hazy straw with white head that lasts and laces. Smells of tangerine/tangelo, funk, and some bready notes. Drinks with a moderate tart bite and no lingering bitterness. Light bodied. Tastes of tart tangelo, white grape, and slight wheat flavors. Dry, tart finish.

Bottle: Pours a mostly clear, bright yellow color with a soapy, bone-white head that wastes no time drifting to a thick, foamy film & collar. Huge Brett bomb on the nose, but elegantly so. Tart, sweaty pineapple with lots of cheesy, cork-y funk... Borderline sour green apple skins, faint orange notes, musty barnyard, & bale upon bale of damp hay. First sip hits with a very tart, nearly sour lemon-y & stone fruit flavor, bordering on acidic but without the intense burn. Big notes of wood, hay, horseblanket.... characteristic Brett-y funk dominates the finish along with a lingering citrus-y tartness that decrescendos into a dry, woody finish. Another great beer from Crooked Stave... labeled as a witbier but drinks more like a saison.

Bottle. Golden pour with white head. Brett and tart sour tone and light citrus aromas. Flavor is dominated by Brett and some tart tones, citrus and wheat take a back seat.

From Chris. Thanks! Rating from notes. A: Cloudy lemon with a white lasting head. N: Powerful lemon and grapefruit. Ample oak and lactic acid. Some barnyard floor, cedar, and pine. T: Very, very sour. Citric and lactic acid. Orange comes to mind in terms of the sweet and sour aspect (though this version was Brett and not the orange version - in fact, I didn’t know this was an offshoot of the Color Orange version until trying to find this one.) M: Light, carbed, and biting. O: Reminiscent of RR Beatification, actually, Which is definitely surprising for a witbier. I really like this one, and it’s the best Crooked Stave beer I’ve had so far.

375ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy medium straw, with a white head. Fruity, spicy, funky aroma, citrus peel, hay, malt, wood, Dry, light to medium bodied, low bitterness, balanced CO2. Funky, sour, spicy taste, lemon peel, malt, earth, grass, cider apples, wood. Long, acidic, tart, wonderfully balanced finish, that ends on a refreshing, bitter citrus peel note. Delightfully drinkable, not extremely complex, but great even so. (2014-01-18)
