375mL bottle, Batch 14 2014, drunk 6/11/15. From Rileys liquors, procured from their refrigerated section.
Clear, bright, light-amber liquid is topped by a very small white head that must be coaxed out. It recedes to a ring quickly.
Pros: The aroma is pleasant, albeit a bit simple. Moderate brett and lacto influences provide a vinous aroma as advertised. Alcohol is not noted, nor is it obnoxiously full of oak or tannin.
Cons: If even one speck of sediment gets in the beer, it immediately dulls the beer producing a hugely nutty and strangely medicinal aroma.
Flavor. Pros: The sourness is fairly elegant. Classy lactic and isovaleric/valeric acids are cleanly and simply presented, enjoyably so. Cons: Not to the extent of the Vieille Artisanal, but still noticeably thin, watery and borderline over-attenuated. Undercarbonated and loose in texture with little else to offer than the acid flavors. Slight diacetyl and growing astringent tannin with warming. Still, much, much better than the Artisinal, which in retrospect, I probably vastly overrated by giving a 3. Baffling, the scores this and that are given on this site.
After trying my girlfriendís glass that was the top pour of the bottle, absolutely sediment free, about 25 minutes after opening, itís VERY heavily diacetyl-ridden. As well, a strange soap flavor sits on the tongue. Yikes.

Pours a hazy straw color with a small head and very little lacing on the glass.

The aroma is very funky with barnyard, oak, some light pear and lemon fruitiness, a bit of hay & composting grass clippings.

Flavor is tart & dry, Itís got a good bit of oak, some lemon... & a very subdued bitterness. It is decently sour & does have a good bit of tart fruit character.

Itís perfectly enjoyable sour beer, if it started life as a Saison, precious few of the characteristics that mark that style are found here aside from being very dry. This isnít so much a criticism, as I like the beer quite a bit, just more of an observation... I guess.

glennmastrange (2431) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - MAY 20, 2015
Bottle. Moderate aromas all around, with hay for the malt, lemon for the hops, and moderate to heavy barnyard for the yeast, and background notes of granny smith apple, wood and vinegar. Head is small, frothy, white with good lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is murky medium amber. Flavor starts moderately to heavily acidic and acetic, then finishes moderately acidic and bitter, and sour and salty. Head is medium, dry, with a lively carbonation and a very tart finish. Earthy, sour and dry, nice attribute for a tasty Saison.
