Bottle picked up at HF. Pours a clear somewhat pale yellow with an off white head. Nice tartness with a moderate amount of sour, some light funk, oak, lemon zest, yeast. Moderate+ carbonation and moderate body, fades on the finish but enjoyable overall.

Bottle @home. Haze golden. Small head. Citrus barnyard medium funky. Smooth well balanced oak to sour fruits. Bone dry and the best in my palate from the Staves yet. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

0.375 l bottle from Firma Bier. Deep golden color. Tart, acidic and perfumed aroma with raspberry, sour cherries, lemon and citrus pith. Acidic lemon and sour cherry taste upfront with grainy, phenolic and woody notes in the background. Excellent acidity, sharp enough but still quite drinkable. Fairly low carbonation. Despite the acidity mouthfeel is oily and smooth. Reminds gueuze but is softer and more drinkable.

2014 Batch 16.

Bottle: Poured a hazy light dirty beige color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention. Aroma of tart notes with light oak notes. Taste is a mix of tart notes with some funky notes and some oak notes. Limited acidity with just enough complexity. Body is about average with good carbonation. Interesting flavors with good level of complexity.

375 ml bottle into tulip glass; Batch 9, 2014 vintage. Pours fairly hazy orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big tart lemon, lime, orange, green apple, pear, white grape, pepper, leather, oak, light white wine vinegar, wheat, cracker, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity, of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast, oak barrel, and light-moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart lemon, lime, orange, green apple, pear, white grape, pepper, leather, oak, light white wine vinegar, wheat, cracker, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Moderate amount of yeast spiciness and fruity/acidic tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, lime, orange, green apple, pear, white grape, pepper, leather, oak, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast, oak barrel, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tartness/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness from acidity and yeast spiciness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/acidic, and slightly grainy/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an incredible sour saison style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast, oak barrel, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink with the balanced acidity. This had a lot of similarities to many Gueuze I’ve had in the past, but still had nice spicy saison character as expected. A highly enjoyable offering.

December 31st, 2013 - Last of the three Crooked Stave beers to welcome in the New Year, and it’s supposedly the strongest, and more likely to wallop the palate. Good thing too, as the previous two sours have already put me on my heels, but there’s enough capacity to take on the Surette. Immediately out of the glass the smell is brighter, shining, and as the Japanese would say, "pikapika." Cherries are stirred in and mixed with a pungent acidity, and etched onto an oak board. The influence of the wood is clear here in the nose, and as I dip in for for the first sip, I expect it to show there, too. On the tongue this is much less a saison (thus, saison in name only0 and more like a fair-haired Flemish Sour ale, mostly on the front or fore taste. Closer to the aftertaste there’s a watered and weak saison grain blend, but then the soul of the Flemish Sour Ale returns in the aftertaste, slow and simmering and patient, belaboring the exquisite flavor inside this carefully crafted beer. It’s the weirdest of the three Crooked Staves I enjoyed tonight, but even in its eccentricity, I enjoyed it deeply. And with that a final cheers to 2013, and optimism about beers in the future for 2014.
