From a 375 ml bottle. Pours a light hazy gold with a thin rapidly dissipating head. Aroma has some moderate funk to it, but not oppressively so. Also has notes of carmel, lemon, and grapfruit. The taste is fantastic starting with the balanced flavors of tart citrus tang and mild sweet malt. Some light vinous overtones are also present and some oak flavors from the barrel aging. The finish leaves a crisp tart aftertaste on the palate. The carbonation is light as is the mouthfeel. An outstanding saison. Complex but still very crisp and refreshing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, 0.375l. Pours hazy pale amber color with thick soapy white head, good lacing and sparkling appearance. Aroma of funk, brett, citrus, horse blanket, sweat, soil and wood. Taste starts sour citric and grainy, then mellows with vinous, yeasty and mild barrel notes, mouthfeel is rather dry, while finish is mild bitter. Thin to medium body, slick texture and lively carbonation in palate. A bit thinner than expected, but extremely drinkable...

Bottle from Firma Bier, 2014 batch 15, large sample. Slight hazy golden to orange color, medium frothy head. Aroma of soft spices, slight peppery, bit autumn leaves, soft citrus fruit and orange peel, bit bubblegum, slight funky. Soft tartness in taste, on the citric acid side like "zure matjes", soft fruity sweetness, bit peppery and spicy. Sticky on the palate. Wonderful.

Pours a bright golden yellow with fizzy head. Aromas of tropical fruits and some citrus peel. Funky orange/lemon peel flavors with a nice brett woody funk.

Bottle from Pi-Bar. Lots of Brett and tartness. The barrel shines through beautifully and is not overpowered. Decent balanced, well carbonated. A bit juicy. Medium long finish. Very nice!

bottle @ The Beer Trappe / Lexington KY --- Aroma of fresh grain light yeast. Cloudy medium orange amber color, off-white head with a light orange tint, sheets of lace. Taste is malt in medium carbonation that is attacked by strong souring. The sour moves clearly to a vinous character, combining the taste of wine and sour malt. Very interesting. And so much stronger than I expected. But, it does refresh, and it does awaken my appetite in a positive way. It would be too much to have more than one of these in a session.

375ml bottle at Eronel, Dubuque. Funky leather sour barrel tone. Tart and tangy. Kind of leaning into all out sour territory, whereas the Vielle still seemed like a traditional version. Pungent, deep fruity sour tones. Pretty fantastic US Sour. Can’t believe I’m drinking this at a show. 10 dollars. Tart apricot leathery tang. Solid, but not a Saison anymore.

From notes. Enjoyed at Doug’s house on July 04 for the first beer I’ve brewed with him! 375 mL bottle. The pour is a darker amber color with a large frothy white head that roils down leaving a bit of lace behind. The aroma is full of barnyard funk. There is a light tartness, but it’s all spice and funk. I’m not getting a whole lot else. I can’t say I care for it. The flavor is a little different with a nice addition of some lemon zest, but it’s a little messy. It gets pretty vinous on the finish, which isn’t really what I’d like to see in a saison. It’s an interesting beer, but definitely seems a little messy. The mouth feel is lighter and crisp with a lightly sour funky lemon on the back end with a lot of dustiness. Hmm. I’m not sure how I feel about this one.

Another one from this American saison specialist, batch 15 so a vintage bottle of now two years old. Delicately ’papery’ lacing, medium thick, egg-white, irregular head, lightly hazy warm orange blonde colour with somewhat pinkish hue, turning more opaque peach-orange with yeast sediment added. Aroma strongly reminiscent of buttermilk, next to impressions of fruit yoghurt, lemon zest, melting butter, tulips, orange, peach, pineapple slices in syrup, goat cheese, wet hay, white bread, gooseberry, sweet white wine, white pepper, dry earth, wet wood but subtly so in spite of the oak ageing. Crisp, lively fruity onset, apricot, yellow plum and a lot of gooseberry, tart with a yoghurty sourness and even a lemony acidity that cuts through the whole palate without becoming too sharp or puckering; effervescent, smooth, supple body. Soft bready malt middle, caramelly touch, sweetish but well in balance with the vinous tartness, which dominates the finish amidst lingering malt sweetness, retronasal yoghurt with peach and subtle drying woody notes; a brief hint of earthy, ’dim’ hoppiness is there but provides structure ’behind the scenes’ rather than actual bitterness. Softly tart, vinous, very fruity and yoghurty, this is a very pretty sour ale with a diary-like main character but very well crafted and beautifully balanced with enough sweetness to provide body and rotundity, though it is still the lemony sour theme that gets the last word. Crisp, quenching and very refreshing too, key factors in any good saison even in the modern sense of the word, i.e. at 6.2% ABV and in this case turned into a sour much more than any traditional Belgian saison would be.

Bottle. Hazy yellow, lively white head. Awesome big bretty presence, with clean crackery malts, zesty lemon, and spicy undertones. Just love these beers.
