Vieille meaning “Old” is our artisinal barrel-aged Saison, lightly dry hopped. Each batch release is a diverse blend of Vieille casks that have taken on a soft Brettanomyces character before being lightly dry hopped. Dominated by a floral, citrusy hop character, a subtle herbal note and a tart finish, Vieille’s character exemplifies artisan Saisons.

Draft at the brewery. Pours cloudy gold with a with a thin white head and almost no lacing. Tastes slightly sour and dry, like tropical fruit juice, champagne, and yeast. Light body and low carbonation. Smells sour, fermented, like cheese and apples.

It poured a straw yellow color with a small white head. The aroma was of chardonnay, pepper and some yeast. The taste was a little tart, but the wine barrel and pepper were in the back end. Good stuff.

Bottle from Belmont Station, Portland via Patrick. Pours a slightly cloudy orange brown, slight amount of head. Slight spice, wood, funky tartness. Body lively and lush, finish almost comes in with a eucalyptus honey cough drop kind of thing, very slight bitterness. Great!

Hazy gold, white head. Nose is Brett, funky, earth, and tart. Great palate, smooth brett notes, funky, florals, light spice, easy finish.

375ml bottle. Minimally cloudy, yellowish golden colour with small, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Floral yeasty aroma, minimally spicy, citrusy hoppy overtones, minimally bretty character. Taste is moderately tart, herbal, citrusy fruity, some malty sweetness flashes up in between, floral yeasty overtones; tart and minimally watery finish. Rather mild than pronounced in its typical Saison flavours, slightly too sourish finish for me, well balanced overall.

Bottle from my Portland trip

This is my first beer from Crooked Stave, and I bring high expectations given everything I’ve heard. Maybe this will be the brewery to reverse my opinion of the Colorado brewing scene. Pours sepia-toned into my tulip, modest head. Aroma is light pepper and chicken shed, brett, mild latrine funk, sawdust. The flavor is quite a bit more tart than I expected from the aroma: regurgitated stomach acid but not in a bad way, sort of a gose thing, drying brett, oak, late citrus pith hops. Big flavor here at 4.2%, relatively thin and quaffable on the tongue. This would be an enjoyable session beer on a summer afternoon.

Bottle from Premier Gourmet. Pours unfiltered dark yellow, with some lasting head, showing rising carbonation bubbles. Smooth mouthfeel with a full lemon tart finish. Nicely drinkable. Lots of taste for lower abv.
