Bottled. Rugged amber body, whiffy malts in the nose and roasty malts in the flavour. A competent strong bitter.

Pours a dark brown reddish amber color, with a large rocky white head. Strong aroma, malty with apple, caramel, berry. Lots of carbonation here. Rich malty flavor, roasted, chocolate, bitter and metallic finish.

Nice strong malt and hop aroma with a taste to match - moderate bitterness from start to finish. Nice dark color.

Dark amber color; thin head. Some malt, light roasted malts and strong caramel character (a bit metallic nose); well bitter in the final, also with some aromatic hop. A pleasant strong Bitter.

Cask conditioned - no sparkler - Malt Shovel Northampton BF. This beer has a slightly sour smell to it. It is very dark, almost black. The taste is not mellow, and where there should be a fruitiness I found the taste far too harsh and not especially pleasant but this does gradually improve through the glass. There is no doubt that this beer has character, I just feel that this sample was not the beer at its best.(4,4,5,3,11(2.7))

Much nicer this time, fruit and smoke in the aroma, and lots of malty and fruity notes in the taste. Light roast and bread. Pretty much like an Old Ale (7,4,7,3,14(3.5))

Cloudy brown hue with reddish tints that produced a creamy off-white head and good lace. The aroma hints of crrent, apple, toffee and caramel maltings, aromatic hops, cardamom, allspice, alcohol phenols, earthy and doughy yeast esters. The taste was very fruity and malty, a sharp acidic and bitter tone balanced by the heavy and old flavors of the malts. A hint of smoky, dusty and bready undertones. A touch of spice combines with the bitter finish. The mouthfeel is very dry and lively, the alcohol is noticeable but not overpowering. This beer's fruity acidic nature won me over. It's right up there with some of the better British strongs I have had. Underrated IMO. Try some for yourself.

Pours deep garnet with a full foamy tan head. Nose was sweet, caramel, candy. Flavor gave hints of toffee and bitterness.

This one had an intersting aroma combinded with the coloring that was much darker than I expected for a bitter. We had a foamer here, lots and lots of head overflowing. The taste is kind of off on the tongue and kind of chalky and salty. The malts are nice in the aftertaste, lots of doughhy bread. This is much better when it warms.
