UPDATED: JAN 3, 2012 By this time Silk Tork was getting increasingly desperate at the lack of beer scoops and moved on to cider as a last resort. Now, I can drink rough cider with the best of ’em, and, in the days of my youth in Somerset, frequently did. In fact, the first drinking establishment I ever visited was a cider house, selling nothing else. However, I have never been comfortable with sweet scrumpy as it has to be artificially sweetened. This one managed to taste simultaneously syrupy and vinegary. I can’t say I enjoyed it much. But at least it gave me my first cider rating on Ratebeer. Battersea Beer Festival.

Draught 20l bag (St. Urho’s, Helsinki) as ’prime farmhouse cider’
Deep amber, no head. Sweet fruity apple aroma - lots of apple, some caramel. Also dry woody sourness too. Taste is a great estery kick - some wood resins and glues, but not actually gluey. Wonderfully sweet and gob-smackingly sharp too. Brilliant scrumpy.

Yellow brown colour. Very sweet and juicy all round. Full on artificially sweet apple juice with a very sugary finish. Dries out nicely thankfully. Nothing too special.

On tap at CAMRA cider bar, Bromham Mill, Bedfordshire. Mid gold. Aroma is sweet with an oddly spicy edge. Very sweet taste: it’s like you’ve been eating Mary Poppins’ spoonful of sugar. Cloying.
