If Croucher LOWRIDER was my beer of the year last year (and it was) then this beer is a strong frontrunner for this year’s accolade. I had this from gasflow at Pomeroy’s in Christchurch, initially mistaking the blackboard reference to the 8 Wired C4 Coffee Brown Ale. Interestingly this was described as a "Pale Ale Coffee Stout." I raised an eyebrow and ploughed on. As I write the flavour is still lingering in my mouth and so the memory is as fresh as can be. The aroma was that of coffee: strong but not strong coffee if that makes sense. The aroma of coffee was powerful but not thunderous and carried with it Dutch cocoa powder and even the typical Ethiopian coffee citrus . What a wonderful scent that transmitted straight into the flavour. Chocolately coffee, orange citrus and lingering dusty cocoa. This wasn’t just an enjoyable pint, this was a "Mate, you’ve got to try this if you can find it..." ale.
So often coffee stouts and porters are an overdose of coffee, this wasn’t an attempt at a well balanced beer, the coffee was too much the star of the show. But what a star of the show. Enormously enjoyable.
