Amazing bouquet of malts and hops makes you think this will be a big beer. But you will be surprised how refreshing this beer is for a black beer. Well done!

Pours black with a fluffy beige head and a wonderful sweet fruit/citrus aroma with hints of chocolate and coffee beans as it warms and the head fades. The flavour starts off as a well balanced IPA and finishes with espresso/chocolate flavour like a IS. This beer has an outstanding aroma/flavour and i will be stocking a few of these in my fridge.

Pours black with ruby highlights and a large, lasting head.
Nose shows masses of hops, lots of fruit in there. Apples, peaches, passion fruit and pine. Underneath is softer roasted malt. Very nice!
The roasted malt is much more prominent as a flavour. The hops carry through too, with more fruity and honey notes followed by an aggressive piney and roasty bitterness.
Great moderately high carbonation, works perfectly!

500ml bottle. Black as a moonless night with big ballsy hop aromas that jump right out of the glass. The thick full beige head crackles as it settles, which takes a while. In the flavour there is some coffee and bitter chocolate. Full silky mouthfeel and long lasting aftertaste with hops playing a starring role in this salute to big American hoppy IPA’s. This is one seriously good beer and another example of the high quality beers coming out of New Zealand at the moment.

Awesome beer! Dark beer with ruby highlights, poured with a large frothy head that laced the glass well. Heavy citrusy hopbag aroma, bready malt notes on the nose also. Medium bodied beer, which drinks like an IPA and finishes roasty. Very well balanced beer.

Nice black beer which is light in body. A mixture of smokeiness and citrus. Lasts on the palate.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep ruby/mahongany body, creamy off-white head persists.
Big smack of passionfruit and grapefruit hop, not to mention the obligatory grassy/leafiness you get with American hops. Not to be overshadowed, malt shines through nicely with roasted nuts, burnt caramels and fresh baked cookies.
Full bodied, malt lends a nice density to palate and a bit of roast dryness is noticable amongst the hop bitterness.
Good and quite well balanced combination of dark malts and fruity hops on the body. Malt character flirts with the Brown Porter catagory, whilst hops scream AIPA - it’s an interesting combination, but no doubt done well. Firm bitterness finishes, winning the malt/hop war.
Well brewed and tasty. Suprised to see the Kiwis going for American hops, and somewhat relieved they named it an "American Black Ale", as opposed to the oxymoron BIPA tag people seem to give this faux-style.

Bottle. This one messed with my mind. Poured beautifully black, but screamed MASSIVE US hop aroma’s (as stated above; Amarillo and Simcoe). The flavour delivers big time - oranges/citrus mixed with chocolate from the malt. The malt is fantastic - not too heavy, but enough to easily carry the hops. Not seen too many black IPA styles in NZ, this one is Deeeelish!

good solid malt base with a bunch of hop flavour and aroma. My favourite beer at the moment, could easily smash these back in summer or winter.

Very dark brown red in colour with an open tan head. Hoppy aromas of citrus, pine passionfruit and roasted grains. Pleasant enough in taste but a little thin in body.
