COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Croucher PATRIOT is an American Black Ale. It is black in colour but without the dark flavours usually associated with black beers like Porters or Stouts. It is chock full of American Amarillo and Simcoe hops. Very hoppy on the nose, with a delicious fruity flavour, with guava and passionfruit present.

Jet black with a tight white head that seems to endure. Passionfruit is the last thing I expected from a black pint. What a pleasant surprise. Also vine leaves and citrus. To taste it is significanly lighter than I expected. Not much charry roastiness. Lemoncurd flavours, a twinge of bitterness, berry cane and zest. Not as much IPA as I thought, but a curiosity certainly.

Bottle. Clear dark red/brown with a light beige head that doesnít last. Aroma of grapefruit, some tropical fruits - lychees, passionfruit - and a little pine. Light-bodied. Taste is fruity, with citrus and lychees. Clean, pronounced hoppy bitterness. No roasted or chocolate flavours really - maybe some slight toast or darker toffee. Pleasant hoppy beer thatís not too sweet and happens to look black for no particular reason.

Bottle. Nose was piney with little roast. Thin mouth feel. More a straight forward IPA. Little roast or chocolate with a decent bitter finish. Solid, but needs more body.

Pours red/black. Molasses, Coffee, Toffee. Pine, Grapefruit, Passion fruit. Very well balanced beer. One of my favourites. Tasted at Galbraiths Ale House.

Nose is quite restrained with choc and toffee notes. More hops anticipated in aroma. Toasty, choc malt + piney and citrusy hops flavour and moderately bitter wit some roast character. Quite nice but would expect more from dark beer.

on tap at Hashigo Zake sort of zippy, very dark, big head (dies fast) and nice lacing. Not a lot of nose off the top but it gets interesting when you stick you gob into it - thatís the hard thing about nose and taste, they oft seem to be the same thing. Lightly coffeed and chocolated. A bit toasty? The hops are not really prominent. Wait, there they are. I would say spruce and grapefruit - not overwhelming but . . . yea. [] OK. Now, this New Zealand predilection for assigning wild fruit tastes -" we are in the South Pacific so it must have the regional flavours" - but guava and passion fruit? Pah-leeeez. They are native to South and Central America. OK. Maybe calling it íAmericaní is a just wee stretch but it ainít there. [I will buy some on the way home tonight and reacquaint myself.] Not sure why they insist it is an "American " whats-it and the ascribe very non-regional tastes. MEANWHILE: It is bitter and very full bodied - no hint of anything sweet - but it is all relative.[] This side of full bodied. Tad bit creamy-ish and maybe sticky. Nicely carbonated, and finishes a bit astringently. I like it. Would buy it again. Just donít believe the label with al your heart

Pint at Galbraiths. What a treat. No hiding from the hops in this puppy...passionfruit embellishes the nostrils and the tongue. Little hints of mint as well. Like nectar in a glass. Nice one boys.
