Presented well in the glass, black with a mainly lasting head. Citrus, passionfruit then a bit of chocolate on the nose, which doesn’t too quite present itself as much in the taste, malts more into the play. Seems most everyone is trying this style nowadays.

Bottle athome from Brew, Rotorua
Pours dark chestnutbrown with foamy coloured head, strong orangey simcoe with chocolate, grapefruit and cocoa on the nose. Medium carbonation, with initial malt sweetness seugueing into pithy citrus and some lemon cheesecake notes. Touch of coffee and dark malt astringency in finish, otherwise passes the blindfold test.

From a 500ml brown bottle. Blackish pour, tan head with nice creaminess. Mild lacing. Light roasty nose, aromatic NZ type hops with a white wine and grassy sharpness. Taste has bright grass and citrus with grapefruit hops. Mild malts. Finishes with decent bitterness, grassy hops linger. Dry end. A bit off centre for black ipa, but overalll really good.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Clear dark red/brown with a light beige head that doesn’t last. Aroma of grapefruit, some tropical fruits - lychees, passionfruit - and a little pine. Light-bodied. Taste is fruity, with citrus and lychees. Clean, pronounced hoppy bitterness. No roasted or chocolate flavours really - maybe some slight toast or darker toffee. Pleasant hoppy beer that’s not too sweet and happens to look black for no particular reason.

Pint at Galbraiths. What a treat. No hiding from the hops in this puppy...passionfruit embellishes the nostrils and the tongue. Little hints of mint as well. Like nectar in a glass. Nice one boys.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Nose was piney with little roast. Thin mouth feel. More a straight forward IPA. Little roast or chocolate with a decent bitter finish. Solid, but needs more body.

A little hard to find; down a back street, but in a central downtown location. Super helpfull friendly staff. Cask conditioned ale. Lots of local micros of quality and good imports. Full service bar. Nice Ambiance; very comfortable, cozy. Food menu, including a great appetizer list, looks tasty. Prices are fair for the area. Good music in the background. Beer bottle chandeliers. Sports on flat screen tv.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours black with ruby highlights and a large, lasting head.
Nose shows masses of hops, lots of fruit in there. Apples, peaches, passion fruit and pine. Underneath is softer roasted malt. Very nice!
The roasted malt is much more prominent as a flavour. The hops carry through too, with more fruity and honey notes followed by an aggressive piney and roasty bitterness.
Great moderately high carbonation, works perfectly!

Draught - O’Carrolls Treehouse, Auckland. I must confess that I was somewhat perplexed when I came here to add my notes and found it listed as a black IPA. For me, this beer is all about the dark malts, the coffee and roasted malts in particular. There are subtle citrus hop notes but they are decidedly in the minority on this occasion. Medium body, soft carbonation, a rounded mouthful and an enduring coffee malt finish coupled, again delicately, with a citrus undertone. A fine and fading beige head leaving a soapy lace atop an opaque brown - near black - body. Really good stuff irrespective of style.
