COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Croucher PATRIOT is an American Black Ale. It is black in colour but without the dark flavours usually associated with black beers like Porters or Stouts. It is chock full of American Amarillo and Simcoe hops. Very hoppy on the nose, with a delicious fruity flavour, with guava and passionfruit present.

From a 500ml brown bottle. Blackish pour, tan head with nice creaminess. Mild lacing. Light roasty nose, aromatic NZ type hops with a white wine and grassy sharpness. Taste has bright grass and citrus with grapefruit hops. Mild malts. Finishes with decent bitterness, grassy hops linger. Dry end. A bit off centre for black ipa, but overalll really good.

Draught - O’Carrolls Treehouse, Auckland. I must confess that I was somewhat perplexed when I came here to add my notes and found it listed as a black IPA. For me, this beer is all about the dark malts, the coffee and roasted malts in particular. There are subtle citrus hop notes but they are decidedly in the minority on this occasion. Medium body, soft carbonation, a rounded mouthful and an enduring coffee malt finish coupled, again delicately, with a citrus undertone. A fine and fading beige head leaving a soapy lace atop an opaque brown - near black - body. Really good stuff irrespective of style.

Jet black with a tight white head that seems to endure. Passionfruit is the last thing I expected from a black pint. What a pleasant surprise. Also vine leaves and citrus. To taste it is significanly lighter than I expected. Not much charry roastiness. Lemoncurd flavours, a twinge of bitterness, berry cane and zest. Not as much IPA as I thought, but a curiosity certainly.

Presented well in the glass, black with a mainly lasting head. Citrus, passionfruit then a bit of chocolate on the nose, which doesn’t too quite present itself as much in the taste, malts more into the play. Seems most everyone is trying this style nowadays.

500mL bottle Deep ruby/mahongany body, creamy off-white head persists. Big smack of passionfruit and grapefruit hop, not to mention the obligatory grassy/leafiness you get with American hops. Not to be overshadowed, malt shines through nicely with roasted nuts, burnt caramels and fresh baked cookies. Full bodied, malt lends a nice density to palate and a bit of roast dryness is noticable amongst the hop bitterness. Good and quite well balanced combination of dark malts and fruity hops on the body. Malt character flirts with the Brown Porter catagory, whilst hops scream AIPA - it’s an interesting combination, but no doubt done well. Firm bitterness finishes, winning the malt/hop war. Well brewed and tasty. Suprised to see the Kiwis going for American hops, and somewhat relieved they named it an "American Black Ale", as opposed to the oxymoron BIPA tag people seem to give this faux-style.

500ml bottle pours almost black in color with a 2 finger white head that has good retention and leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is passionfruit and citrus with some caramel and roasted notes. Taste is passionfruit and grainy malt sweetness with some citrusy hop bitterness. Light to medium body with decent carbonation. A tasty brew that is highly recommended.
