3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Muggus69 (885) - Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA - DEC 2, 2011
500mL bottle
Deep ruby/mahongany body, creamy off-white head persists.
Big smack of passionfruit and grapefruit hop, not to mention the obligatory grassy/leafiness you get with American hops. Not to be overshadowed, malt shines through nicely with roasted nuts, burnt caramels and fresh baked cookies.
Full bodied, malt lends a nice density to palate and a bit of roast dryness is noticable amongst the hop bitterness.
Good and quite well balanced combination of dark malts and fruity hops on the body. Malt character flirts with the Brown Porter catagory, whilst hops scream AIPA - it’s an interesting combination, but no doubt done well. Firm bitterness finishes, winning the malt/hop war.
Well brewed and tasty. Suprised to see the Kiwis going for American hops, and somewhat relieved they named it an "American Black Ale", as opposed to the oxymoron BIPA tag people seem to give this faux-style.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 andrewturba (479) - Alberta, CANADA - FEB 15, 2013
Pours a very dark brown colour with small off white head amounting to a few spots and a light ring around the glass after a few minutes with moderate lace. Aromas of grapefruit, tropical fruit, and roasted malts. Flavours are citrus, pine, roasted barley, medium bitterness and overall a bit thin, could use a bit more of a malt backbone. Good beer, not sure if there’s a style for it yet.

Dark beer with ruby highlights, poured with a large frothy head that laced the glass well. Heavy citrusy hopbag aroma, bready malt notes on the nose also. Medium bodied beer, which drinks like an IPA and finishes roasty. Very well balanced beer.
