COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named for the ridiculous 4 foot dirt pile we had to put our brewery on to get us out of the FEMA-designated 100 year floodplain (no-one can remember this part of Spearfish ever flooding). This robust porter is black in color, is medium-bodied and has a rich, roasted malt flavor ending with a pleasing hop flavor and mild hop bitterness.

Prufrockstar (1017) - Seattle, Washington, USA - OCT 12, 2014
Thanks to my mom for shipping me a 6-pack to help me get the elusive South Dakota tick. Pours dark brown with thin khaki head. Aroma of bread and chocolate. Some roast. Taste: chalk, roast, resinous hops lurking in the background. Cookie, definitely thinking cookie. Medium- body, chalky texture, good carbonation. Overall: good name, good beer -- don’t mind having a few more cans of this in the fridge.

Sampled the last glass of this porter at the brewery’s taproom in Spearfish, South Dakota. Pours a near opaque dark brown brew with a decent, thick off-white head that dissoloves to a thin ring and film on top. Aroma of dark chocolate, steamed mocha, with a touch of dark pitted fruit and flowery hops. Taste is smooth, creamy with a toasted dark chocolate and dark bread flavor. Very light bitterness. Finish is smooth, creamy with a slight coffee/roasted trail mix (raisin & nuts) aftertaste. Nice to see this new brewery can make a decent porter.

Can.

Not only does Prufrock deliver the elusive SD tick, he comes through in grand style with a crow-themed brewery. Don’t tell him how much I appreciate it, though -- he probably thinks I drink with him because of his rakishly good looks and I’d hate to see him disillusioned.

Dark pour, brown highlights, brown head. The nose on this one is pretty nice: really roasty with some fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie, vanilla, and maybe a hint of coconut. Some Nestle Quick as well, but so it goes. The flavor follows: on the sweet side, strong roasty elements without ever veering into cigarette ash, cookie dough malt. Hops are subdued but make their presence known in the late finish. Abundant carbonation, almost prickly on the tongue.

All in all, this is quite a pleasant surprise. I don’t think I’d buy it regularly if it were available here, but it’s also not the sort of chore that you grind through simply to tick another state.

tl;dr summary: SD tick!

Nice, solid porter. Non-sweet. Pretty good roastiness. Pretty good mouthfeel. There are better, but this one is good.

Goodgrief (1794) - Middletown, Delaware, USA - SEP 19, 2014
Thanks to eaglefan538 for the can and the SD beer. Pour was moderately dark brown, with very thin head. Flavor was roasted malt, caramel and some toffee. Some off metallic flavors. Thin mouthfeel. There was nothing really offputting, but it wasn’t great either.

Reviewed from notes. Received in trade. The appearance had a dark brown to almost black color, one and a half finger white foamy head that dies within less than a minute; some lacing, but not too much. The smell had a roasty sort of coffee to chocolate coming through in a combined sort of way. The taste was a nice bitter roasty coffee taste with a decent chocolate-ness coming through. There is a slight bitter roasty coffee aftertaste with a quick dry coffee-ish finish. On the palate, it sat at/about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionable aspect to it. Carbonation is good for the style and for me as there’s enough bitterness invading the mouth and tongue but not too much to lead one astray from the style. Overall, I say this is a good American Porter well worthy of having again and also has a decent sessionability to have with its respected food.

Can into a english pint glass. Thin palate, quick dissipation of head. Bad aftertaste - not the greatest "highest rated beer from a state." Come on South Dakota - you can do better!

c/o mnmike. Thanks again! Very grateful. Aroma - for a porter it’s a bit scant on aroma. What does exists is made up of a chocolate, light coffee, and nutty nature. It’s kind of small though. Appearance - body is black/brown; liquid is opaque; the head sets up about 1/4" and quickly rings out. Taste - the taste is immediately somewhat pungent, slightly roasty, there is a bit of chocolate malt to boot. Palate - body is medium to light; texture is between thin and thick; the carbonation is average, but approaching a lively nature; the finish is slightly bitter on the sides and middle of the tongue.
