Named for the ridiculous 4 foot dirt pile we had to put our brewery on to get us out of the FEMA-designated 100 year floodplain (no-one can remember this part of Spearfish ever flooding). This robust porter is black in color, is medium-bodied and has a rich, roasted malt flavor ending with a pleasing hop flavor and mild hop bitterness.

Pours a cola brown color with a slight roasted malt aroma. Taste is similar with a light oatmeal flavor throughout. A dry aftertaste, with a roasted nut flavor. A nice Porter, thanks to John Mosquera.

12-oz. can. It has a cola aroma similar to Dr Pepper along with a heavy amount of charred barley, earthy hops, a bit of toffee, and (appropriate given the name) a touch of gardening soil. Pours clear dark brown with cherry wood highlights; no head. Airy chocolate and a slightly vegetal bitterness combine for a pleasant balanced taste with a hint of burnt toast and brown sugar. The body is spot on for a porter; bitter cocoa finish. A decent brew.

Can, shared at RBSG. Medium-dark brown, beige head. Treacle and chocolate, dry finish, a tad thin. But who cares-- South Dakota tick!

12oz can pours out dark brown topped with a ring of a head. Nose is roast malts chocolate and some sweetness. Taste is more of the roast malts and chocolate.

Pours brown with a large soapy head. The aroma has dark caramel, chocolate, dates, figs, molasses and walnuts. It has a medium body with a light amount of carbonation. The body is a little on the slick side. The taste starts off with roast, a woody version of chocolate, dark berries, some oxidation and a bit of harsh roast/toast. The finish is pretty woody and has some cocoa. Decent porter. Thanks to gregwilsonstl for passing this on along to me.

12 oz. can from shrubber85 - thanks again, Roger! Pours a mostly clear amber-brown with a small beige head that settles into a ring and leaves some spots of film in the glass. Notes of chocolate and toasted and mild roasted malts, tobacco, earth, brown sugar, and mellow spice. Light-medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and a rich, toasty, sweet mouthfeel. A little past its prime, but not a bad porter. Simple.

12 oz can thanks to phaleslu (my first South Dakota tick). Pours a clear cola brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have pretty much what I would expect from a basic porter, roasted malt, some fruity character, ash, mild bitterness, the body is thin, some earthy hops late, new state tick though, winning.

12oz can, big thanks to phaleslu for sharing. Brown color, with pretty much no head. Toasty, chocolate, nutty. Medium-plus body. Kind of soft light carbonation. Moderate sweet taste, light to moderate bitter, touch of a bite. Not a great porter. Wow. Impressive in it’s underwhelmingness.

Pour on tap at Independence Ale House, dark black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of ash, roast, slight coffee into a bit of caramel, chocolate, slight vanilla. Taste was a mix of caramel, bread, dark fruit, dark chocolate, vanilla into a bit of coffee, roast, finishing slightly sweet.

Finally crossed off South Dakota! Chocolate. Tasted from a can. Nothing remarkable about this other than South Dakota is elusive.
