Named for the ridiculous 4 foot dirt pile we had to put our brewery on to get us out of the FEMA-designated 100 year floodplain (no-one can remember this part of Spearfish ever flooding). This robust porter is black in color, is medium-bodied and has a rich, roasted malt flavor ending with a pleasing hop flavor and mild hop bitterness.

From a bottle. Pours very dark brown with a bubbly, frothy, beige head. Tastes like mild coffee, grains, earth, sweet malt, lightly roasted. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like malt, grains, light coffee, and roasted meat.

Flavor is dry, roasted malts, light earthy hop bitterness, light chocolate, and faint dark fruit esters; dry roast finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Thanks to a77cj7 on this one. A: pours a dark brown porter with little translucency. Transient head whit dissappears and leaves a couple spots of burnt cream bubbles. No lacing. S: Bit of cardboard on this one (oxidation?). There’s plenty of dry malts and hints of dark cocoa nose, along a hint of milk choco feel. The cardboard keeps coming back. T: Nice. Creamy, cocoa, graham, dark malts. Plenty of leftover resonance on the back end. I like the dry flavor despite the cream tones. M: Medium body and medium carb. Good mouthfeel in that the beer makes my tongue feel the sense of possible milkiness, but then the finish is quite dry. O: I think the beer is well crafted. The problem is in the packaging here. There is obvious oxidation and thats an issue. The look could use a little help (maybe some head, lacing), this issue’s resolution could offer more opportunity in the nose as well. 12oz can thanks to Jake65. Ticks off my last remaining State. Pours a watery but opaque black with some sticky, beige head. Nose is very nice, chocolate, vanilla, mild toast, malt, molasses, dark brown sugar, earthy, some iced mocha. Flavor is very similar, lots of solid flavor, vanilla, chocolate, molasses, dark brown sugar, earthy, a little bit of umami, some toast, a little coffee ground. Clean, dry finish. Very nice. My can said 6%, very drinkable.

Big thanks to Lowery bear for this uber SoDak tick. Black with tan head. Sweet and slightly roasted aroma. Very sweet flavor, hint of roast, some slight hop notes in the finish. This is the porter?

Tasting at Bruce’s Pad. South Dakota tick! Thanks Ryan! Murky dark brown beer with a tidy pale tan head. Palate is light and crispy. Light and sweet dark malts with a little not so sweet chocolate. A little ripe orange. Light dry finish. Not bad.

Can at Theydon B’s 5K, thanks to Ryan. It pours deep brown with a small beige head. The nose is cocoa, roasty, toast, earth, caramel and sweet brown sugar. The taste is roasted malt, toast, earth, brown bread, cocoa, light toast, decent bitterness, cardboard, caramel and cola with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Fairly standard porter by all acounts. Decent nonetheless.

Can shared at my 5K tasting at Bruce’s pad, huge thanks to Ryan for leaving this state whale with us to tick the fuck out of SD, 13/11/13. Very dark mahogony brown with a light tan covering that thins to a swirl. Nose is dark toffee, earthy tones, light cocoa, mineral notes. Taste comprises light roast, treacle toffee, brown sugars, brown bread, earthy cocoa. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying finale with light roast. Ok porter but that was not what this tick was all about !

Big cheers to Ryan for this. Nothing to rave on about here, it’s just an absolutely solid as fuck porter. Easy drinking. Just solid with a little roughness to give it that something extra. The name is appropriate. Good stuff
