COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named for the ridiculous 4 foot dirt pile we had to put our brewery on to get us out of the FEMA-designated 100 year floodplain (no-one can remember this part of Spearfish ever flooding). This robust porter is black in color, is medium-bodied and has a rich, roasted malt flavor ending with a pleasing hop flavor and mild hop bitterness.

Can at Craig’s. Pours a very dark brown colour with a lacy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, roasty malt and coffee. Beautiful oily mouth-feel with similar flavours. Moderate carbonation and CO2 prickle. Very nice.

Can courtesy of Keith (thanks for the pile of dirt man) pouring up nice and dark with dark red hues mixing with darker mahogany and mocha like head. The aroma is pushing out plenty of notes of dark roasted malts, burnt malts and a touch of cherry like esters. The taste is mostly roasty malts and a nice load of dark roasty to burnt malts and a bit of chocolate malts. Yummy stuff.

A bit thin-bodied for my preference, but the coffee and chocolate flavors are decent enough. Nothing exceptional but easily drinkable.

Skyview V, 11/11/11. Courtesy of BVery. Black color with no head. Chalky and charred aroma. Very light chalky flavor and mouthfeel. Watery body. The slightest hint of roast in the flavor.

355mL can thanks to Travlr. This is to complete my quest of rating a beer from every US state. Well, still waiting for a brewery to open in North Dakota. The pour, well, the can opening opening seems filled too high and there is little hiss. However, a lively clear brown pour it is with a large, cascading brown head. Nice speckled lacing. Nose is small seaweed/nori/umami character with molasses and caramel. Small smoke and raisins. Taste is at first is lighter than expected, refresh character, mild lemon juice and then morphs over a few seconds to lots of dirt, earth, and headache inducing flavors like iron, aluminum, chalk. Poor chalky, powdery palate. Feels quit thin and perhaps some odd higher alcohols causing an instant headache. Don’t worry Kevin, there is an extra can for you to enjoy ;)

Out of can. Pours very dark, beautiful appearance. Slight chocolate nose. Tastes like cold strong coffee- not much else. Not the most exciting beer.

Black as oil, little head. Sweet roasted malt aroma. Taste: Of course roasted malt...also notes of caramel, honey, vanilla & chocolate. Some rather mild balancing hops. Pretty thin for a porter but this increases its drinkablilty. This is a solid porter.

Sampled at CanFest 2011 in Reno. Pours a nice brown color with an espresso head. Mild chocolate notes in this one and a little kick of hops at the back.
