COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named for the ridiculous 4 foot dirt pile we had to put our brewery on to get us out of the FEMA-designated 100 year floodplain (no-one can remember this part of Spearfish ever flooding). This robust porter is black in color, is medium-bodied and has a rich, roasted malt flavor ending with a pleasing hop flavor and mild hop bitterness.

Can @ home. First SD tick! Deep brown pour with red highlights. Tan head. Aroma is fairly nutty. Toasted brown bread and pain au chocolate. A bit of coffee. Light cardboard. Flavor is moderately bitter. Some coffee acidity and mild pepper. Chewy toasted malts. Medium body, a touch thin. Prickly carb. Fine.

Many thanks to jsquire for this can! Deep brown with a very fast disappearing head. The beer is smooth and nice chocolaty. Roasted bitter in the aftertaste, not too deep, but refreshing and easy to drink. A bit viscous and very dry. The aftertaste is dry roasted with a nice intense bitterness. Roasted malt, dry brown burned sugar, nice bitterness.

12 ounce can into pint glass, no can dating. Pours crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop and roasted bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice American porter! All around great robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Can at home via trade to get me some Dakotas since my trip fell through this summer. Dark brown pour. Faint nose of nestle chocolate. Tastes of cocoa nibs, cola, earth, brown sugar, vanilla, hint of molasses. Everything subdued and semi sweet. Could use punch up

From a cool-looking 12oz can into a dimple mug, thanks so much Greg! Opaque dark reddish brown with sudsy beige foam which fell to a thin but persistent head, some lace. A perfectly true-to-style English Porter, though it may not fit every American craft beer drinkers’ idea of Porter. Malty and caramelly, hint of toffee, pure dark chocolate, nuts, loads of dark stone fruit and berry flavours: tart cherry, black plum, grapeskins, black currant, cranberry. Strong Black Malt impression, in the Yorkshire/Ringwood/Kennebunkport style. Estery ale yeast, earthy/woodsy/resiny Fuggle-ish hop balance. Light-medium body, moderate carbonation, very complex aftertaste, somehow simultaneously rich and dry. So very good. South Dakotans may not have much local beer, but with stuff like this in cans, you wouldn’t need much else!

Pours a cola brown color with a slight roasted malt aroma. Taste is similar with a light oatmeal flavor throughout. A dry aftertaste, with a roasted nut flavor. A nice Porter, thanks to John Mosquera.
