COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
India pale ale was traditionally believed to sustain the ocean voyage to British Colonial India. Higher hop rates and proof bolstered the shelf life as well as the flavor.

Brewed for The Crown & Goose, Knoxville, TN

Draft at C&G Pub. Clear, orange-gold with a small lasting head. Not much aroma, and served a bit too cold. Flavor is mild citrus soap and woody hops, in nice balance with caramel malt. Light-medium body is slightly tingly and pretty quaffable.

Thanks to lithy for supplying this one for the IPA tasting. Pours copper with a white head. Smells of earth, tea, some citrus. Tastes earthy and bitter with a mild bitter finish. Decent, but a bit subdued for an IPA.

GABF 2008. At the festival, this was designated ’’London’s Best’’ on the card at the table. I’m really surprised to see it listed as an IPA here, since I was under the impression it was meant to be a brown ale of sorts. Maybe this rating should be for a new brew by this brewery, but I am not confident enough to enter a new beer without being certain so I will post my impressions here anyway. From my notes: Dirty dark amber brown, thin vanilla head. Low cola and vegetal aroma. Toffee malt, weird marzipan note, thin. Overall an awkward beer (and now having seen its designation as an IPA, even more so!).

Draft at Crown & Goose. Poured clear copper color with an average fizzy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate sour citrus aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and flat carbonation. Medium bitter flavor with a medium bitter finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable brew.

Draft at the Crown & Goose during half price pints and half price fish and chips Mondays. Semi hazy brownish orange color with a slight white head, no retention but some lacing (looked identical to the Bitter to me so I copied the description). Some floral, fragrant almost soapy hop aromas amongst sweet toasty malts. More malt sweetness and some breadiness with a piney hop finish.

Slightly cloudy orange with a small white head. Aroma is big on the bready, toasty notes, with just a whiff of hops. Its definately a maltier version of the style, with a lot of toasty, bready flavors on top of a subtle, herbal hop note.

On tap. Pours a hazy golden pour with a white head. Light citrus aroma that was there through the mix of food aromas. Flavor is pretty solid with a light fruitiness that is followed by a decent bitter finish. Carbonation is solid but it is just a tad lacking in body. My favorite at this place. Nice to have a local made IPA in a resturant.

Draught. Pours a hazy gold with a white head. The aroma is bright and citrusy enough, but with definite musty malty quality. Yeah, this is a British leaning IPA with plenty of woody bitterness and a bit of toffee but I get a hint of grapefruit and caramelly sweetness to bring it back to the American side a bit. This is pretty fair. It’s not overly bitter but certainly clean and balanced.
