3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 ChainGangGuy (3837) - Canton, USA - JUL 27, 2011
12 ounce bottle - $1.79 at Hop City in Atlanta, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours out a very dark brown body, garnet-hued at its edges, and topped with a full-sized, foamy, ecru-colored head.
Smell: Fairly mild scent here, with light notes of roasted barley and chocolate, a bit nutty as well. Given a moment to warm up, a small portion of fruitiness emerges as well as letting the chocolate quality grow.
Taste: Toasted and roasted-up malts with a small splash of simple Maxwell House coffee and an iota of chocolate. Modestly sweet. Subdued earthy, spicy hops with a relatively light bitterness contributed. Light touches of chocolate and berries dulls to a taste of chilled tea-soaked toasted grains, then, simply, it’s gone.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-light carbonation.
Overall: It’s an acceptable, fairly simplistic porter, though it got a tad better as it warmed.

Aroma is dark grains and some grittiness, while the appearance is paler than most porters. The flavor is fruit, caramel malts and had a mild soapy texture. Didn’t really care for this.

Comes out of the tap a dark, reddish, barely transparent brown with a fairly thick, fine-bubbled, light tan head. Aroma has a strong horehound overtone and hints of caramel and coffee. Sumptuous flavor has horehound, caramel, semi-sweet chocolate and roast coffee notes. Texture is fairly thick and fizzy, leaving a smoky and slightly candy-sweet finish. Look for it.

Draft at the brewpub. It poured a dark brown color with a beige head. The aroma was of chocolate, roasty malts, and nuts. The flavor was light roasty malt, coffee hints, and a somewhat watery chocolate finish.

Pours dark brown with deep ruby highlights. Head is frothy and fades quickly to a mild film of a head. Nose provides coffee, sweet malts, toasted caramels, and dark bread. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, toasted malts, earthy hop flavors, caramel malts and an element of smoke definitely involved. Full flavored and body for the low abv. Really nice beer this one thanks to Aaron at big red.

Clear reddish-brown with an evaporating beige topper. Perhaps the lightest colored porter I’ve ever seen. Aroma of dark malts, nuts, chocolate, toasted grains, stale socks and yeast. Taste of spent malt, dark malts, adjuncted “stuff”, yeast, mild chocolate with a slightly bitter finish.
