A vibrant reddish-black hue, substantial body and pleasant headiness give this dark Belgain-style ale an alluring first impression. The intense flavors of dark candi sugar conspire to deceive with flavors that remind us of preserved fruits and holiday spicing, but the true agent is the Trappist yeast -- and a suspicious drinkability.

Bottle from Belmont Station. Pours dark ruddy copper with slight, transient, tannish head. Aroma of medium dark stone fruit - rather plummy. Med + body. Mild carb. Flavor is very prune with some yeast/spice. For me it’s a dubble trying to be a quad. Extremely tasty with the pluminess. Finishes more dry than not, tho there’s a good bit of malt involved.

500mL thanks to a trade. Pours a clear, deep red with medium yellow foam. Nose is cloying cherry syrup/grenadine. Taste is metallic, grenadine, harsher stomach acid, cloying sugar. Finish is copper metallic all the way. Not good.

Bottle:   Burnt orange, thin to moderate sudsy tannish head, spotty lacing.   Bready aroma, slight fig/date, some alcohol.   As it warms I get more biscuit and brown sugar.   Similar on the tongue, muted dark fruit, whole wheat bread, biscuit, bit-o-honey cereal, with some burnt brown sugar.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Doesn’t seem all that Belgian, or at least doesn’t have that mustiness that I get from Belgians.   Sweet finish, bready, some fig/date, caramel (a little burnt), and some strong biscuit linger.   Meh... would guess American Strong Ale versus a Belgian example.

Bottle (bottled Feb 10, 2014). Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is medium brown. Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (cookie, caramel), lightly hoppy (flowers, herbs), with notes of brown sugar, raisin, cinnamon, overripe banana, clove. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Smells nice, but is mostly sugar-oriented odors. That portends a very sweet mouth experience, and so it is true...there’s some yeasty tartness that helps to balance a bit along with the alcohol, but all in all it’s quite difficult to drink much of (even given the style). Diabetes beer.

500. Pours a murky, grainy dark mahogany with rubied edges in the light. Creamy tan head goes away quickly. Big sweet nose, showing plums, brown sugar, caramel, and dark toffee. Sticky thick body with flabby carb. Rich creamy nougaty body, showing plums, brown sugar, caramel, toffee. Those are all sweet notes, but it stops shy of being heavily cloying. Mild nutty sweet finish.
