COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hops climb up twine that’s just loosely tied to the trellis with a half hitch knot— and this Imperial IPA is just loosely tied to tradition. The Mosaic hop imparts surprisingly floral aromas instead of the more expected grapefruit-y notes. On the palate, complex layers of flavors might remind you of guava, mango, stone fruit and lemon, unraveling your idea of what an Imperial IPA should be.

Bottle from Bottleworks, Seattle; bottled Feb 11 ’14
Golden color, hazy, with the light of the sun; the head is small. The aroma is nice, but not deep; more was expected, maybe because the bottle is 3 months old; some fruit salad, not specifically citrusy. Good note, the mouthfeel is quite lean and highly drinkable; the malts are subtle, with light toffee notes; and the hopping is perfect, mostly fruity, with original notes of guava and mango; moderately sweet body, well integrated with the strong bitterness; the final is slightly more resiny, a nice biting end, some sweet orange too.
A bit expensive (6.56$ after tax, 37cl) but very nice.

Bottle from Malt & Vine. Pours gold with a foamy white head. Aroma of green veg/hop and light fruits. Med + body. Flavor is dankish with crazy fruits and some supporting caramel. It’s mosaic, but has lots of citrus too. Some quaffs make me think of sliced cactus. Very strongly flavored without a hint of heat. Very, very hoppy and tasty. Not to mention nicely bitter.

Taste comprises ligh floral hop notes, orange pith, pine, grapefruit. Full bodied, fine carbonation, good dose of hop bitterness in the finish. Good stuff.

Tap at Crux. Pours a low haze gold with webby lacing. Nose is peach, mango, tropical melons, sticky, dank. Taste is sugary tea, very sweet as usual for Crux. Melon juice, soft bitterness. Dense, cloying sugar. For Crux, it is one of their better beers. But hot damn this sugar problem needs to be fixed.

On tap at Apex, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma is full of tropical fruits, piney hops, and biscuity caramel malt. Flavour is similar, with a wonderful balance of tropical fruits, resinous hops, and caramel malt. Loads of depth here, with a lightly sweet, and resinous hoppy finish. Excellent.

On tap at Capitol Beer & Tap Room. Pours Dark golden with a nice off-white head and a citrus aroma. There is a full-bodied pale malt flavor with a bitter citrus finish. A solid brew.

On tap at Apex. A really odd brew. Pours a clear golden color with a medium white head. A big sweet nose of oranges, melons, almost buttery sweet. Sweet flavors of cat piss, cannabis, light low bitterness, super almost shocking unbalanced sweetness. Not good. Drinkable of course, but seemingly devoid of early boil bittering additions. Unbalanced and not my thing.

UPDATED: OCT 18, 2014 Yes, please. Very well made double IPA - not over the top but very nice soft aromatics and flavor. Lots of floral and tropical fruit in both. Medium bittering. Sooooo smooth. Also goes from tap to bottle very very well. Such a soft feel for a 10% beer!

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium to dark yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), moderately hoppy (grapefruit pith, resin), lightly yeasty (dough), with notes of aspirin, souring fruit, bile, pear syrup, alcohol. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter, chalky/aspirin-ish. Medium to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. It’s hard to imagine anyone liking such a rough, pithy, aspirin-ish brew, but it’s all subjective and some folks must enjoy those characters. Syrupy, biting, and downright unpleasant. A drain pour for me.
