Many breweries procure their hops right here in the Northwest. But this beer features the Galaxy hop from Australia, a country famously populated by England’s outcast convicts. Outcast IPA employs these hops aggressively from hop back to dry hopping stages. Yet the result is a balanced and bronzy ale, with medium hop bitterness complemented by moderate maltiness, showcasing aromas and flavors reminiscent of passion fruit.

Bottle. Yellow pour with white bubbles. Nice herbal, grassy and citrus hop aromas. Similar fresh hop tones, great for 2 months old.

Yes folks I AM rating this beer a 4.8. NEARLY PERFECT. I am going to be bold and say that this beer very well could be this generation’s version of PLINY the ELder. It is THAT big and different. I bought this bottle on a whim, thinking that most other IPAs that feature galaxy hops tend to showcase the hop in a subtle way while blending in other American C-hops. This particular beer though brings forth the Galaxy in a very unapologetic way. Pouring a light copper, slight haze, with an average amount of head, one would never expect the BLAST of galaxy hops form the first sniff. There’s a deep dank-ness about the aroma, the tropical passion-fruit aromas hit you right in the nose-hairs! It is absolutely unapologetically tropical fruit. On a plus note, they did not f this one up by complicating the malt bill. The malt is simple, straightforward, a touch of caramel sweetness and a little bit of biscuit, but not much more. The bittering is incredibly smooth, no harsh cohumolone induced pucker faces or cat pee aromas. It is so smooth that it really just rolls off the tongue and implies a slight alkali-sensation. I wish more people could try this double IPA. This IPA should push brewing to the limits and do what Dogfish head 90 and Pliny the Elder did for the last 10 years. I have a new favorite beer, and it’s an outcast.

Bend’s best Double IPA. Hands down. Tasty, and pair this with food from their pub (Crux Grilled Cheese) and you’ll be in hoppy heaven.

On tap @ Brouwer’s. Golden-orange pour with white foam. Kind of catty and some green melon on the nose. A bit toasty. A lot of apple as well...meh. Some bread, lemon, pine, and herbs. All over the place on this one. Flavor is a bit more "bitter caramel water" than I’d like. That said, it does have some nice citric qualities and a decent fruit character. Lightly herbal and woody on the finish. Fairly bitter. Not great, but okay, I guess.

500ml bottle pours out a crisp golden topped with a sand head. Nose is pine citrus grass caramel and sweetness. Taste is as the nose with bread malts and a till grapefruit pithy bitterness on the end.

Bottle. Really nicely done pineappley floral single almost double IPA done here by Crux. Digging the Galaxy hop concentration. Hint of bitterness throughout, never overpowering. Long lasting finish. Would be great as a 6er brew.

Bottle (bottled May 12, 2014) Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is medium yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain, sugar cookie), moderately hoppy (resin, grapefruit), lightly yeasty (dough). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety/syrupy texture, lively carbonation. Straightforward nose and overly sweet. An unremarkable rendition.

Draught into a growler. Pours a mostly clear light amber color with very little white head on it. Nose is fairly hoppy, with some nice grapefruit and subtle resiny notes coming off of it. Taste is fairly bitter and a little bit sticky, with a subtle residual sweetness on the end. Quite yummy, and I’d drink it again happily.
