COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Tough Love is bold but nuanced, an homage of sorts to the traditional Russian Imperial Stouts and the ruling style of Catherine the Great. We Construct it with dark, roasted malts, malted rye, and oak-smoked wheat, and then banished it for nine months in Kentucky Bourbon Barrels. The aging smooths out the edges on an otherwise bold statement, and bitterness succumbs to tender strokes of vanilla beans, hints of dried cherries, and new layers revealing themselves with each sip.

375ml bottle at the pub thanks to Eric. Pours out black topped with a small tan head. Nose is bourbon barrel sweetness pit fruit apple and roast. Taste is as the nose with a nice vanilla barrel notes chocolate and sweetness.

Black in color. Thin tan head that dissipates quickly. Minimal lacing. The aroma consist of peanut butter and warm toast. It smells like popcorn. There is a strong sense of liquor in the taste. The finish is like drinking a red wine. Very complex beer. The taste starts as a potent beer and finishes with a wine taste. Confused as if I like it or not.

375 ml bottle- Pours black with a a one finger head that reduces. Aroma is licorice, molasses, peanut butter, oak. The taste is more oak than the aroma led on, strong, red wine is strong, odd beer. Unique, strange, not the best, but interesting.

Pitch black pour. Not sure why a 375ML force carbed bottle is corked, capped and then waxed. anyway light bubbles in the head. Smells like licorice, smoke and chocolate. There’s a lot of smoke in this beer! chewy with a lot of chocolate, vanilla and dried dates. Oily finish.

Black pour with tan head from 12 oz bottle at home. Chocolate, oil, raisin aromas. Taste changes a little each sip. Cocoa, plum, vanilla, leather, and of course bourbon taste. Complex and delicious beer.

"Faaaaaaaantastic. Took a chance on this one at $1 per ounce, but it was worth it. One of the best of a very good 2014 so far. The bottle said something to the effect of "bold, yet nuanced" and that couldn’t be more accurate. Motor oil dark with nice brown head. Light smoke under dark chocolate and roasted malt, slightly spicy from the rye, and an undertone of bourbon. No one aspect took over and none was underdone. Fantastic balance."

Bottle at Crux with Taylor on a fantastic Friday. Pour was given to me by Russell Crecraft. Pours black small head that goes away. Aroma is roasted malt, some sweet malty toasty notes, hint of rubber but in a nice way. Taste is thick roasted malt, leather, toffee, hint if sweet malt. Nice full bodied stout that is keeps a drinkable quality.

UPDATED: JUL 4, 2014 Bottle (2013 batch). Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is black. Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (chocolate, roasted grain, coffee), with notes of vanilla, wood, whiskey/bourbon. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy/velvety texture, soft carbonation, moderately alcoholic. A nice if somewhat fatiguing rendition. I would have liked to try it prior to the long barrel aging, probably was a nice base stout before age dulled it into something less interesting. More finishing bitterness and a fresher, more vibrant nose would probably make this 4+. Tartness is fruity/berry-like and pleasant...helps the balance a bit.

Dark brown/black with a light chocolate head. Aroma is chocolate, vanilla, fudge, bourbon, molasses, hint of leather. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel, sweet on the palate with a roasty finish. Taste is chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, hint of smoke and leather. Yum.

Bottle shared by Bacterial! Dark black pour, no carbonation and an aroma of mild dark chocolate. Flavor is charcoal & peat melded with bitter chocolate, and dry woody bourbon on the aftertaste. I dig it.
