COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Tough Love is bold but nuanced, an homage of sorts to the traditional Russian Imperial Stouts and the ruling style of Catherine the Great. We Construct it with dark, roasted malts, malted rye, and oak-smoked wheat, and then banished it for nine months in Kentucky Bourbon Barrels. The aging smooths out the edges on an otherwise bold statement, and bitterness succumbs to tender strokes of vanilla beans, hints of dried cherries, and new layers revealing themselves with each sip.

375, corked, capped, and waxed. Pours jet black with a dense and creamy dark tan head that falls immediately away to not too much. Big sweet bourbony nose, some apricot showing. Lots of roast and coffee as well. Creamy thick body with soft carb. Roasty sweet coffee and black liquorice body. Long ashy roasty finish. Everything’s here, everything’s nice, not really a new spin on a style we’ve had a million times by now. Very good stuff. Just a lot like what everyone has done.

Bottle. Clear dark reddish brown with a thick, foamy, dark brown head that lasts. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee, smoke, cherries, bourbon, dark chocolate and light wood. Flavor is roasted malt, coffee, cherry, bourbon, vanilla, dark chocolate, and light wood. Full bodied, smooth, moderate carbonation with a dry end. Warmth on the end.

7/III/15 - 37.5cl bottle @ ACBF 2015 (Vichte) - BB: n/a (2015-331) Thanks to 77ships and AdamJackson for sharing the bottle!

Clear dark brown beer, creamy beige head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of bourbon, sweet, caramel, alcohol, sugary impression. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of vanilla in the start, bit sugary, dried fruits, dusty, nice, quite some alcohol though. Aftertaste: hoppy bitter touch, some coffee, mocha, roasted, alcohol, dry bitter finish.

Draft - Dark roast, some chocolate, some booze and wood. Jet black with a decent brown head. Boozy sweet bourbon, very unbalanced and a bit hot.

Wow, for being an almost still very strong beer like this, it’s actually very drinkable; quite a good brew. Barely a head, so barely any carbonation or carbonic tang. But what is there really does work well and balances in a masterly way the rich characteristics of the very thick sweet components. I pick zero off flavors, even into the finish which in my experience, especially for this kind of beer, is rare. I can drink this stuff - and get sloshed. Really good beer.

Bottle from Beer Monger, Portland, corked and caged; vintage 2014
Pitch black color, thick, with small brown head. The aroma is initially mild, but then it starts developing interesting waves of dark chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, cookies. Full bodied, yet the mouthfeel is lean, sweet in moderation; the flavor is dominated by the dark chocolate, almost to De Molen levels, the roasted malt is present but not ashy; there is just a bit more liquorice than necessary, a hint of dark fruits, a bit more bourbon barrel; while getting warmer, this beer gratifies the palate with multiple layers of flavor and some tobacco and leather; strong bitterness, with a nice pungency in the final, including a touch of anchor peppers.
Great beer, a real pleasure.

EBF Boston mars 2015. Un Imperial Stout puissant aux saveurs et flaveurs de bourbon, de vanille, de chocolat. La texture est superbe. Ma première bière de cette brasserie et espérons pas la dernière. Une finale chaleureuse.

Part of blind tasting BA Imperial Stout tasting.
Good name for a beer of this type. This came off to me as the most prototypical of the BA Impy Stouts. I got the most alcohol of all the other beers. Also, had a bit of an apple juice character, very light.

Belle grosse noire.

Draft at EBF. Dark pour with some head. Through me off since I thought it was a sour. Dark malts, rye, chocolate and bourbon aromas. Flavors were similarly dark and bourbon filled. Had a taste of sour in my mouth, probably just lingering from other beers.

Part of blind BA imp stout tasting, shared by Dustin - thanks! Clear dark brown, thick and oily. Sweeter than the others - chocolate chip and graham cracker cookie dough. Tasty stuff, tied for second on the night.
