On tap at the TjBeer Fest. Honey copper pour with a small but retaining head. This is officialy my favorite mexican beer... too bad its not for mass market yet. Roberto Gonzalez (Cucapa brewmaster) told me it had won medals at the Beer championships and without any reserch i believe him. The aroma is of flowery hops and sweet malts with a slight twinge of caramel. The flavor is more like a very malty dopplebock with a nice warming without alcohol or ether taste. Now the palate is what i think got this beer its medals... silky, smooth, velvety, with soft carbonation and a full body. Very high marks... i hope they bottle this soon.

A barley wine from Mexico?? And it’s good? Believe it, it’s true. Totally nailed the style, as the aroma, appearance flavor and palate are all spot on. I expect great things from this brewery.

CASK at Pap. They have bottles too. This is a beefy beer that takes no crap from your gringo ass. Its Machete in a bottle. Thick with chocolate, nearly burnt caramel, sweet smoke and white pepper. Alcohol balances the sweetness nicely, and the effect is like a brawl in a 200 year old bar with maplewood floors just happened on your tongue.

Pours a nice brown with a off white head. Aroma is caramel, malt, hops, brown sugar. Flavor is caramel, malt, brown sugar, hops, smooth and a little smoky. Pretty good barleywine and the best beer I’ve ever had out of Mexico.
Re-rated from Cask at papago. Much warmer, no carbonation. Supple caramel, brown sugar, subdued hops, very smooth and silky. Great stuff.

Had 2 bottles at the London Pub in Hermosillo, Mexico on St. Patrick’s Day.
Was very surprised and impressed by this barley wine... I was worried that my trip to Mexico on business would be spent trying to imagine that the Negro Modelo actuall had more flavor than it did.
The Cucapa poured dark with a little head, and the aroma was strong and malty. Taste was rich and reminded me favorably of comparisons with an Old Guardian. Looking forward to finding more of this back home in LA.

22-Jan-11 (750-ml bottle: Purchased 13-May-09 for $10.99 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) Shared at a friend’s birthday party, this beer was one of the big hits. It pours a clear, amber-brown color with an inch of bubbly, beige head that settles to a wide, creamy ring and a dusting. The malty aroma is nicely balanced between toast and caramel, with a developed bouquet of caramel candy, buttered toast, cocoa, earth, and mushrooms. On the palate, the beer is sweet, caramely and candy-like, but not sugary in any way. Cocoa and milk chocolate are balanced by a touch of tart, dried fruits like apricots and prunes. The beer is fairly earthy and woodsy from cellaring, and overall, the sweetness is nicely balanced with earth and light tartness. Medium-full in weight, and though sweet in flavor, it’s still dry and gently acidic for superb balance and drinkability for a barley wine. Light-medium carbonation on the palate, but a crucial touch of light acidity makes up for it, giving the beer a nice refreshing quality. A ring of lacing rests above several patches of foam. Overall, this is a superb English-style barley wine, and it has cellared wonderfully. It was such a terrific beer, I’m really happy I was able to share it with such a beer-smart crowd, which included brewers, bar managers, beer retailers, and craft beer aficionados.
