COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Tequila Barrel Aged Ale
What is more representative of Mexico than Tequila? Our inspiration comes from the mountains of Jalisco where agave is king. This is the first tequila barrel aged beer in the world! We took a batch of our multi prized Barley Wine and put it into tequila barrels and here are the results, the experience is overwhelming.

22 oz bottle with lots of dust on it. Even still, couldn’t pass it up. Hazed orange amber pour with an off-white head. Oxidized caramel and biscuit aroma with some fruitiness. Flavor has a definite bright fruity spirit note indicative of the tequila, overlaid on some caramel and a mix of oxidative and barrel notes. The oxidation isn’t enough to take away too much from the bear, though. Strange, but not too bad. Seems to go well with chocolate.

Bottle... Clear, deep copper pour with a small, wispy, off-white head. The aroma is a melange of orange marmalade, crusted port and fruit cake. Medium to full-bodied with a slick mouthfeel and soft carbonation. The aroma is a muddle of dried dark fruit and fallen apple esters, flanked by tangy-sweet port and a mild, totally misplaced, tannic bitterness that lasts throughout the boozy, estery, lightly-bitter finish. This could be easily mistaken for a 25 year old bottle of J.W. Lees Harvest Ale or Thomas Hardy’s Ale brewed at Eldridge Pope. Doesn’t speak to me - at least, not in a language I understand. Comprende?

Reddish brown pour with a light brownish head. Tequila, oak, caramel, floral hops, brown sugar. Muddled.

Bottle at THE Barley Wine Tasting - East Croydon. Many thanks to Kenny M. for this Mexican rarity. What is more representative of Mexico than barley wine? Probably almost anything, really. Pours cloudy ruby with a creamy tan head. Jammy berries and citrus fruits on the nose. Weird flavor, medium sweet, slightly tangy malts, alcohol, some dirt, melon. Definitely some stale tang. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish, further tangy malts, berries. Meh, I’m not crazy about it overall, but it’s not entirely bad. Viva Mexico.

Pours red with some lacing.. Smells of fruit, licorice, and booze. Taste is complex with molasses, soy sauce, and dark chocolate. And tequila. Surprisingly good.

Bottle. Pours chestnut brown with off white/tan head. nose/taste of citrus, sweet malt, lime, tequila barrel, oak, vanilla and light caramel/toffee. Medium body. The barrel aging transforms this beer into a citrus/lime bomb. Very little caramel/toffee or traditional barleywine notes.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a garnet red/copper color with about an inch light tan head. Head retention is good, with a small amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, it smells like dark fruit, tequila, brandy, toffee, and brown sugar. The brew tastes like dark fruit (both sweet and tangy), molasses, toffee, tequila, red grapes/wine and a bit of apricot. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it’s a bit slick and sticky with low carbonation. I thought this was a good overall brew. I’ve had it sitting around for a while and figured might as well drink it today. Pretty interesting beer, I’m pretty sure this is the first tequila barrel aged beer I’ve had. $7.99 a bomber.

THE Barleywine tasting. Hazy red - brown beer. Big pale tan head. Light airy palate. Nice creamy malt base supports mild limey tequila. Trace of lemon. That’s about it - simple but really well done and it was a nice contrast to all the Bourbon and Whisky BA Barleywines. A very pleasant surpsrise!

Bottle @ THE Barley Wine Tasting. Cheers Ken. The pour’s deep brown with a medium tan head. The nose is light stinging hops, some cactus, agave. Vegetable. The taste is apricot, medium roasted malts, woody boose and some shocks of chocolate. Medium body, pretty drinkable. Not bad.

UPDATED: SEP 4, 2012 Bottle, thanks to Ken at THE Barley Wine Tasting, August 2012. It pours deep red-brown, with a thin yellow-white head. The nose is caramel, sweet agave, tequila, cherry, sherry and tangy dark fruit. The taste is lime, agave, tangy cherry, plum, grape, jam and agave, with a bitter-sweet finish. Full body, low carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. I wasn’t looking particularly forward to this one, so all in all was pleasantly surprised with the outcome!
