COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In this case the name came first over a few shared pints with the BBC brewers. For those unfamiliar with the reference, some might consider you lucky. After coming up with the name we needed to create a brew to match. So off we went to the Louisville Beer Store for some more brainstorming. The resulting creation is a German/Indian Bropwn Ale. The two Malts we selected were Golden Promise and Brown Malt. To make this Brown Ale unique we fermented it with a Berliner Weisse yeast and large late hop additions of German Hallertau Hops. The addition of Jaggery, a palm sugar from India, provides a nutty aromaas well as a dryness to the final product. Two batches of this beer were brewed, one each at Cumberland Brewery and BBC (St Matthews). Although brewed to the same recipe, it will be interesting to note the slight differences that come form the different set of equipment at each brewery.

Draft pint at Bluegrass Brewing Co. (St. Matthews). Collaboration between Cumberland and BBC. Pours a semi-cloudy brown amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of nuts, sugar, rye, wheat, caramel malts, spices, and mineral notes. Flavor of nuts, rye and other spices, caramel malts, sugar, mineral notes, and some tartness. Medium-bodied, with sharp carbonation and a spicy mouthfeel. Very unusual, and definitely aggressive for a brown ale.

ON tap at Liquor Barn. Clear medium brown with a fizzy white head. Nice hoppy aroma for a brown ale. Tastes of malt, citrus, and light cereal grain with a nice crisp finish.

On tap at Bluegrass Brewing Co. in Louisville (not sure which location, I was just stopping by). Poured a mahogany/red, clear (because it’s filtered, according to the menus...). Quite impressive, actually. Definitely tasted the hops, but it was surprisingly balanced given the high BTUs. I would stop in again if the rest of their beers were this good.

Draught at BBC. A collaboration with Cumberland. Very interesting take on the Brown. The yeast and palm sugar push this brown in a completely different direction. Tasty with a bit of that sugar and weisse flavor.
