wheninhell (485), louisville, Kentucky, USA May 2, 2007 Thanks to gunsho for sharing this growler. I believe that he originally purchased the growler because I was broke as hell when this was on tap and he wanted to make sure that I had the chance to try it.....and it sat in his fridge for about three months before we got around to drinking it.....I knew it wouldnt kill me but I didn’t think it would be any good.....I was wrong.........anyway on to the notes.
looks great. black with a dark brown head. good lacing. nice coffee aroma. bittersweet mocha flavor. sweet mocha finish. medium body.
........so i guess my notes dont do this beer justice. it is just such a solid fantastic stout. i always really enjoy all of cumberlands stouts but this is my favorite by far. i really want to try this fresh. Thanks again Andy! gunsho (134), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Apr 10, 2007 i kept a growler of this in my fridge for almost three months and my oh my was it delicious. the aroma was heavy with espresso and chocolate. it had a pitch black color with a golden head. the flavor lacked the power of the aroma but was still good. like an alcoholic chocolate malt ovaltine mixed with espresso, delicious. This was the second of two samples. I’m not sure if this was one was a seasonal or a regular offering but if you see it on the chalkboard be sure to ask for a pint. While not quite a dry stout, it is still an interesting take on the style that pleases the palate well.
Aroma / Appearance - The nose is nothing but straight black coffee. Not suprisingly, you can tell that the beans were from the Heine Brothers store based on the smell. A light maltiness sat in the background waiting for the right time to apppear. The body itself was pitch black with a nice one and a half finger head. There was a hint of lacing but not enough to last for more than a few seconds.
Flavor / Palate - Unlike most coffee based beers, which I do not like that much, this one was palatable. It tasted of straight black coffee with only a trace amount of creamer added. The mouthfeel was very creamy. While very dense it was not so thick as to be too complicated. This is a very well made beer from a low key brewer who will hopefully be up and coming in the near future. Libeerian (209), Garner, North Carolina, USA Jan 25, 2004 The flavor of this beer isn't quite dry enough for a real dry stout but it's well balanced. With 2 pounds of coffee for each 2 barrel batch, it really lives up to it's name. Cumberland was the smallest and friendliest pub I visited in Louisville.
