Sampled at GABF on 9/16/2010. This old ale pours a medium brown color. Large sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, fruit and sweet, with lots of bourbon and oak. Medium to full bodied Old ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, caramel, bourbon and oak. The hops are herbal. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Very smooth tasting, and would be a great sipping beer. Nice winter warmer. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Tap sample at Keg Fest Of Ales. Pours clear reddish/brown with an average off-white frothy head that mostly lasted. Moderate to heavy complex toasted malt, wood and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy bourbon sweet sweet flavor and sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Very good brew.

On tap at the GTMW. Reddish brown with a medium tan topper. Aroma of bourbon, wood, mild alcohol and roasted malts. Taste of bourbon, oak, alcohol and mild fruit. Some mild sourness comes through. Smooth body with minor warming effects, overall a solid beer and an interesting us of bourbon barrel aging.

I don’t know if this was a one-off festival release or something that the guys at Cumberland have been saving. Either way it was a great little surprise coming from a true microbrewery (go visit the brewpub some day to see what I mean). I would definitely have ordered a full pint if it caught my eye as long as the price was reasonable. If you are a fan of balanced bourbon barrel aged ales catch this when you can.

Aroma / Appearance - The reddish orange body had a nice tint under the blazing sunlight. A thin head was all that stood between it and the open air. Vanilla, caramel, and oak meld nicely into a smooth experience which reveals through the heaviness that this beer is not trying to be subtle.

Flavor / Palate - The same aromas that are exposed in the nose make their way into the flavor with the addition of a dry wooden finish. The old ale and bourbon barrel play against one another in a fun way that made me want to grab another pour. Had it not been been for the heat and the 6:00 deadline this would have been a repeat towards the end of the day. I hope it shows up again somewhere else so others can enjoy it.
