502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jan 4, 2009 I just had Cumberlands "Red Ale" and am guessing it is this. I agree with most of the people here that it was pretty, but ultimately boring. It didnt really smell or taste like much except a blunt but somewhat muted (if that makes any sense) bitterness coupled with a bland and amorphous malt character. Overall: not horrible by any means, just not special. There are better beers to try at Cumberland. laguerita (111), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 10, 2008 i had high hopes based on the gorgeous color. but it was ultimately underwhelming. apparently a result of too much crystal malt according to noblesquirrel. NobleSquirrel (1100), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 8, 2008 Very pretty filtered red color, nose was quite hoppy. On taste, I had a big problem with the overuse of crystal malt. All I could taste was caramelized malt and a hop bitterness. My least favorite. esjaygee (1467), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA May 25, 2008 On tap at Cumberland brew pub. Dark red with a thin head. Aroma of sweet and roasted malts, caramel and mild hops. Thick body with a roasted character to it. Taste of caramel that finishes with some nice mild hop bitterness. Smooth and balanced. GeneralGao (3051), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Nov 5, 2007 Draft at the brewpub. 5.5% AbV. Poured a clear ruby brown color. Smelled of resiny hops and light brown sugar. Flavor was similar with some nice malty caramel and mild to moderate hop bitterness of about 4-5 out of 10. gunsho (134), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Apr 17, 2007 i’ll admit i dont like the style but i have had irish reds i have enjoyed. this is not one of them. while it tlloks good when poured with a deep red color and creamy head teh carbonation quickly dies and leaves no excitememnt for the last two-thirds of the beer. the flavor is simple as is the nose, bits of caramel and spice, dominated by a bitter hop taste. not matt’s best. wheninhell (485), louisville, Kentucky, USA Oct 23, 2006 slightly cloudy dark amber with an off white head that leaves nice lacing. aroma heavy on the orange. very fruity with some caramel malt and a nice dose of hops. bittersweet caramel malt and citrus hops make for a very balanced flavor with a bit of spice. long bitter hoppy finish. medium body. lively carbonation. this was a great very balanced red. very impressed. i have had this beer from time to time in the past year and it just keeps getting better. Kevin (1917), Colorado, USA Mar 11, 2006 Garnet tan body with a large lacing lasting head. Malt ball nose with graham crackers. Malt flavor that is an odd earthy sweetness. I want to say it is like a dry gummy bear, but that isn’t quite it. Caramel and grass is more appropriate, or maybe syrup and grass. But it is dulled and not a sharp sweetness, but mild and almost nutty. Nutty, yeah that is it, especially the finish is like creamy peanut butter. Only negative is the slightly metallic taste it leaves on my tongue. I’m not upset about having a growler to enjoy though.
