Fall seasonal September-October. For centuries the Germans have celebrated the coming of Autumn with the roll out of a special once-a-year amber lager. With a malty flavor, clean finish and more alcohol than summer beers, it is a beer that was eagerly anticipated by Germans during the summer months and savored when it finally arrived. Lucky for us, the wait is over! Its finally here. We proudly present our own Oktoberfest Lager. Brewed in true German style, we use only the best German malts and hops to create this perennial favorite. The beautiful amber hue comes from toasted and caramel malts, while the maltiness is contributed by the German Munich and Vienna malts. The cold fermentation temperature and even colder aging give this fine lager its clean, crisp finish. Brewed strong and lagered cold, this one may sneak up on you, so be careful. Brewed with Pale, Munich , Vienna , CaraAmber and Caramunich malts. Hopped with German Spalt hops.

Ah hah! They did it again! Fabulous brew. I was happy. For once in my measly miserable life I was happy. Then it was gone and I could resume my regular status.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass. This bottle was purchased at the (2008) Buffalo Central Terminal Oktoberfest and was specially labeled for the event. Appearance: It had a dark coppery amber color with good clarity. The head was small, slightly off white in color and faded to a thin, slick ring of lace on top. Smell: The aroma had a deep burnt caramel and toasted malt presence with a somewhat spicy and leafy hop aroma. Taste/Mouth feel: The flavor had a deep muddled malty sweetness. There are notes of burnt caramel, dark molasses and brown sugar that mix with slightly spicy and leafy hops. Overall this gives it a dark and murky character. The finish has more of a hops bitterness popping the deep maltiness as well as some grainy alcohol notes. It has a full body with a heavy, smooth and slightly slick texture and light to average carbonation. Notes: Its dark deep murky complexity is very interesting but seems to take away from its overall drinkability.

Rated while drinking: Pours a nice amber color with a big off-white head. Reeks of of sweet caramel malts, roasted nuts, and sugar. Smells like what an Oktoberfest should smell like! Flavor is heavy on the sweet burnt malt, backed up by a pretty complex aftertaste. Solid and balanced. Crisp on the palate, but not too much carbonation. Fresh though. Very drinkable. Yummy Oktoberfest for this brisk October night. Growler at Hegedorns for a little under 12 with deposit.

(Growler from Hegedorn’s) CB Oktoberfest is a hazy amber beer with a foamy off-white head with pretty good retention and lacing. The aroma is of pretzels and malt. It’s a simple and soft smell. The are hardly any hops in the nose. When detected, they seem wooden and minty. It is smooth and medium-bodied-- a bit syrupy. The carbonation is prickly and it feels a bit silty. It’s well-balanced. The malt is like a sourdough pretzel. The hops are firm but smooth and quite medicinal. There is almost a quinine aftertaste. This growler made for good drinking in the back yard on a picture-perfect autumn day. Eins, zei, drei, zuffa!

Bitter bavarian/sharp malt aroma. Mild hint of butterscotch. Needs agitation or comes off as stale. The appearance is hazy reddish orange. Short-lived head. Nice color, clear body. The malt flavors are very sweet and butterscotchy, but with a little bitter bite at the end. Feels very smooth and buttery, true to style. An easy-drinker. Be careful not to let it sit too long or it will get musty.

On tap, poured an orangeish brown. Nothing spectacular, but a standard Oktoberfest here. Malty, somewhat nutty with a nice sweetness. Pretty crisp.

2010 Autumn Festival of Ales - Honeoye Falls, NY Amber in color with a thin tan head. Aroma is rather malty and bitter with some hops, but mostly sweet malts. Flavor is smooth and malty with a nice sweetness at the end that is a slight hoppy.

Att Cottage Hotel following Autumn Festival of Ales - Really flat, a signature it seems of this style, with some wood on palate. This one was vaguely creamy. Not for me.
