COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Custom Brewcrafters is a micro brewery that also contract brews for restaurants and pubs in northwestern NY. Winter Seasonal December - March. This traditional Scottish-Style Ale is all you need to keep warm through a western NY winter. To make this beer as traditional as possible we scoured the earth for the finest Scottish malt we could find to truly capture the earthy, peaty flavor associated with imported scotch ales and single malt scotches. We then use a special mashing and boiling schedule to produce the fine amber color and caramel flavor associated with this type of beer. A gentle hop addition is used to balance the elevated malt content of this hearty winter ale.

Growler from brewery - Roasted, smoky malt switching over to bittersweet chocolate. Decent head and lace. Tasted more like a Porter to me.

Have heard of this one, sampled at brewery. Very very dark and very sweet. I didn’t notice the alcohol, but it is there. I didn’t notice much in the way of hops either. This is not may favorite of this type, so sweet.

Fresh at Alternative Brews. A decent scotch, apparently revived every year. Bit of alcool and caramel in the aroma. A generous white head with bubbles. Creamy, tasty, full mouthfeel and a little amount of lacing.

Sampled 11/04 - this is the 2003 brew, aged in oak for 1 year. Vanilla, sweetish nose. Oak is completely dominant. Rich vanilla/oak notes gives way to tart grapeskin, fruits, slight smoke/fishiness. Rich but.. the buttery heaviness is too much. I’d like to compare this oaked version to a fresh batch.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2008 [draft - 2004 Autumn Festival of Ales - Honeoye Falls, NY] Cloudy bronze color with a creamy white head. Very sweet aroma of toffee mixed with smoke and malt. Very sweet and malty flavor with a sweet toffee finish and a touch of hops at the end. Very sweet aftertaste. Quite delicious.

Poured a deep mahogany color, beige color head. Aroma was heavy on the malt with a touch of smoke. Flavor was pretty sweet from malt with some caramel undertones and some, but not too many, hops in the end. Pretty full body. Pretty nice.

Got Malt? CB could promote their Wee Heavy this way. The 1998-1999 was nicely maltier; the following year less so (but a little sweeter); but 2000-2001 is the vintage year (so far). Malty, with a color between copper and brown, bright with red highlights, and just enough sweetness and hops. Magnificent!
