Gusler (2655), Tucson, Arizona, USA Aug 27, 2005 The beer emerges from the 750ml cork and caged brown bottle a somewhat beclouded light golden orange with a substantial bright creamy white head that evaporates leaving a tight girdle of lace to surround the glass. Nose is fruity, pineapple, tart tones of grapefruit, sweet malt to back it all up, a touch of yeast, quite complex to this old schnozzle, start is lightly sweet, grain presence noticeable, top is light to moderate in feel. Finish is stingingly acidic, the hops dynamic in their spiciness, severely dry. In its own way it reminds me of Duvel and maybe even Orval, a fine brew to start out a Saturday afternoon, I also have a bottle of Angelique in my new pint sized DBF, that is within arms reach of the computer. The old DBF is humming away in the garage, loaded with beer that is just in case the old Gusler gets snowed in! lol
Heathen (666), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jun 24, 2009 THOUGHTS: I had been having a lot of tripels around the time I tried this. This one was much better that Legacy Euphoria, but not quite as good as Gouden Carolus Tripel. This one was super yeasty. It hid the alcohol very well. Very complex, but slightly off. It hardly needed to be chilled.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a slightly hazy dark yellow to light orange with beautiful carbonation and an average to large, fluffy and creamy, ever so slightly off-white head that keeps a thick sheet and left excellent lacing. The aroma was moderate caramel and candy sugar, moderate to heavy doughy yeast along with lighter leather and cheese yeast notes, cherry, white wine, honey and lemon drops. The initial flavor was sweet and a little bitter; while the finish was very sweet, acidic, slightly sour and a little bitter with an average duration. There was fruity candy sugar, a little tiny bit of brown sugar, spices, yeast, tea, a little like toast and marmalade, fruit cocktail, a little lemon, honey-lemon cough drops, and a little metal. The medium body was sort of creamy then dry with rather fizzy carbonation and an ever so slightly metallic, slightly chalky, lightly astringent and dry finish. nuplastikk (919), Maryland, USA Jun 22, 2009 750ml bottle. Murky, gray-orange color. Small, patchy head. Sweet golden yeasty aroma, some candi sugar as well maybe. I’ve been aging this beer for the better part of a year, and it hasn’t fared any better for it. Lacks the vibrant freshness and effervescence that really carry it. Lots of sweet apple liqueur flavors. Underwhelming, though still pretty good. Some mild tartness and bitterness. Deserves a rerate. alobar (857), Harleysville, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 21, 2009 Straw yellow color with a tall soapy whit ahead. Aroma of apples and spice. Taste of apples, spice, sugar, and yeast. Nicelt carbonated. Somewhat of a hot edge. Very good beer! darbish (71), Portland, Oregon, USA Jun 9, 2009 pours a very, very pale yellowish-white. aroma is very complex, like apples, strawberries, champagney and cinnamon. the strongest aroma is by far, apple juice and would seem overpoweringly sweet. flavor is difficult to explain. it starts out tasting like a mimosa (very sweet and fruity), but the sweetness is fleeting and is replaced with a dry bubbliness. alcohol content is noticeable, but masked well. feels very fizzy and a slight bit dusty. dries out my mouth a little bit. Rastacouere (5512), Montréal, Quebec, Canada May 21, 2009 A frothy white foam of moderate dimension is eternal thanks to champaigny carbonation activating among the sedimented gold. Gently estery nose that feels clean, fresh and spicy, more doughy than very characterful. The first mouth contact surprises with its higher than expected sweetness, though it does dry-out in the finish, which revolves around fresh bread and exotic fruitiness. At 8.5% alcohol, this remains quite drinkable. Its mouthfeel is, not surprisingly, influenced by biting, rather small-bubbled carbonation which accentuate the dry-out effect, but do not feel fluffy or pillowy like top examples. Rather straightforward, sweetish tripel, but sometimes, this is what you’re craving for. WVHouseofBeer (246), Morgantown, West Virginia, USA May 15, 2009 Pours a nice hazy golden color, with a big head. Aroma of malt and some fruit, with pretty much the same taste with decent carbonation. This is a pretty good beer, but not nothing near to Karmeliet or even the Golden Monkey for that matter. And it was from Belgium too... LC-CP DocLock (4440), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 16, 2009 750 cc bottle. Pours turbid gold with 3-fingers of clingy white head. Nose is spicy and yeasty, with some floral, fruity, and slight rock sugary notes. Tastes floral, more sweet and fruity than I suspected, with some apricotty honey notes late, and floral, spicy yeasty notes at mid-palate. Gets a bit tarter late, and the rock sugary fruity sweetness is replaced a bit by a more spicy dry floral hit. Decent. MaltDawg (674), Richmond, Virginia, USA Mar 27, 2009 (Sample Date: 12/20/2008 Source:Other) 750 ml bottle 8.5% ABV Grainy with peach and pear aroma. Toasty. Slightly cloudy light golden with small white head. Grainy flavor with light fruits and spicy Belgian yeast character and honey and candy sugar. Spicy subtle bitterness. Medium body and mouthfeel. Sweet finish with residual spiciness. Very good.
