Bottle. Clear reddish brown, minor beige head. Aroma is mainly grain with notes of bread and dry malts. Weak caramel and malt flavors, but overall bland and sour. Sticky mouthfeel. Not impressive.

Can at home. Golden brown with a off-white head. The smell is quite nice with aromas of berries and some wood, oak I think. I find oak in the mouth as well, and some bread and caramel. Light bitterness and watery mouthfeel. Unfortunately it smells better than it tastes. The flavours are not very strong and is a very boring beer in the end.

Can, unexpectedly purchased at my local supermarket which normally doesn’t sell this regionally marketed beer. Deep coppery body with a small, off-white top. Nose is faint caramel and hints of roasted barley. Taste is similar; a "semi-bodied" beer with some caramel and roastiness in the back. Medium carbonation, and no obvious faults production-wise. While Dahls Juleøl is far from a good Christmas beer, it is among the best of the grocery store-strength winter seasonals I’ve tasted this far in the (still early) season in Norway. At least in my opinion.

Not too much aroma, almost far malt. Amber colour. Medium sweet in the taste and it turns very watery and flat. Not so good.

This rating is based on memory and my notes from tasting it in december 2009. The most disappointing part of this beer is the color, which is like strawberry jam, with a slight hint of brown. The mouthfeel is ok, semi-thick, and there’s a nice caramel aroma lurking in the background, but ufortunately it stays there in the background. The bitterness, which according to the bottle is discret, is to me way too much up front, and the beer finishes with a cringe. There is also some fruitness in the background, and I find my self wishing for it to come forward, but, alas, it stays backstage with the caramel.

Bottle 0,33l. Dark red-brown colored. A large creamy head. Modest fruity aroma. Some burned malty flavor with a sweet bitter finish. No feeling of Christmas in this one.
