Head is a small offwhite ring round the side. Hazy amber body. Earthy musty umami and caramel aroma with fruity alcohol and honey notes. Unusual. Sweet-dryish caramel and strawberry taste with earthy musty notes. Fullish body. Mild, slightly hot mouthfeel. Sweetish linoleum and earth aftertaste with tropical fruit and vanilla notes. Low on bitterness. Mild, light, and drinkable = lethal. Interesting. Many subtle and complex aromas. (0.2l draft at Craft Beer Keg, Nagoya. 9%, so 2007 vintage.)

33 cl bottle vintage 2010, brewed 09/2010, bottled 02/2011, BBE 02/2013
Aroma is sweet with berries, malt and some sugar. Flavour is also sweet with malt, berries and lots of sugar. Needs definitely more ageing (or more hops).

33 cl bottle @ Timo A. 2010 Vintage. Brewed 09/2010. Bottled 02/2011.
Pours slightly hazy copper color with small head. Aroma of malts, syrup, toffee, dark ripe fruits like plum and some dates, mild dark berry notes and caramel malts. Flavor of caramel malts, yeast, apricot, ripe fruits, toffee, rye, nutty notes and some candy sugar. Very sweet palate with mild bitter fruity finish. A bit too sweet and could perform way better after a couple of years of cellaring.

Bottle at the brewpub on my Japanese stag. Deep clear copper with a lacing beige lid. Somewhat vegetal aroma initially picking up gummy bear, jellied red fruit, aniseed. More jellied fruit, English (?) hop character showing; Shep on acid, deep balance, caramel on biscuit, slippery condition. Light peppery alcohol, spots of lace, shrubby German-like hop now...Finally fragrant, with a pollen-like, discreetly hop-sodden nose. Another big, well balanced sipper from Daisen G that’ll take your head off if you’re not careful.

12 ounce bottle 2009 edition. Pours a mostly cloudy dark amber color with a medium white head. The aroma is sweet oranges and sugary candy. The flavor is lots of herbal tea, some orange flavored candy, mellow, toffee, caramel, earthy, this beer reminds me of a past due IIPA in some ways. Sweet residual sugars that make it a BW. Decent, leaves you with a tangy orange flavor in the finish.

Yen 800 for a glass (say 200ml) at Ushi Tori. Was always going to be a tough gig coming off a bottle of JW Lees the previous night but this showed quite well. Lighter weight style that was a touch more minerally than expected. Not at all sweet and cloying which actually makes for a BW you can consume quickly. Serving in a Riedel Vinum cabernet glass was a great touch.

Bottle. 2009 vintage. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty hoppy dark fruit aroma. Slightly sweetish malty dark fruit flavor with hints of hops and some weak hints of caramel. Has a sweetish malty dark fruit finish.

2006 Vintage on Draft Appearance: Orange brown. Aroma: Initial vegetal note that quickly dissipates. caramel, rounded prune, raison. Flavor: Soft dried fruit with toasty/lightly burnt caramel. Prune flavors appear as it warms. Unobtrusive vegetal note.. Comment: Mild palate and finish. Score: Ar6-7/Ap3/Fl7/P3/O14 2007 Vintage (best of the 3 and scored above) Appearance: Orange brown like the 06. Aroma: Some slightly sharp vegetal and hop smells at first. Pruney malt that later evolves into caramel. Flavor: Flavorful prune, roasted caramel, with a long, 40 second+ prune/caramel malt plus bittering hop finish. Comment: This has the most intense aromas and flavors of the three. This tends to confirm my thoughts that many barley wines age for maybe 2 years and then tend to fade. 2008 Vintage Appearance: A shade darker orange/brown than the others. Aroma: very closed. Touch of fruity malt at first with ripe orange and caramel showing as it warms. Flavor: Ripe orange & plum malt is at the forefront. Fresh malt flavors linger on the finish. Comment: Smooth and sweet. A bit young. Ar5/Ap4/Fl6/P3/O15.

Great nose. Very malty and evoking other big names. Taste is slightly above average, with minimal dark malts and light hopping for the style. Very british. Close but no cigar
