3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, - OCT 21, 2007
My Bottom Line:
This deeply malty Imperial Stout offers caramel sweetness, crisp roastiness and subtle smoke, all in a chewy mouthfeel built for succulent desserts.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam covers the brownish black.
-The somewhat low carbonation helps the malts (and their residual sugars) shine.
-Some roastiness dries up the finish, but smoke and caramel continue on.
-Alcohol is not important in the flavor profile.
Bottle; best before 2009/02/09.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 laiti (1675) - Tampere, FINLAND - APR 16, 2012
33 cl bottle, bottled 01/2011, BBE 01/2013 Aroma is smooth, really malty and somewhat sweet with cocoa and some caramel. Feels like a good doppelbock. Flavour is really malty and somewhat sweet with chocolate, some coffee and caramel. On blindtasting I would take this as a doppelbock. Very rich on chocolate, a bit too sweet but good.
3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 olio (1530) - Tampere, FINLAND - APR 16, 2012
33 cl bottle.
Pours red-black color with small head. Aroma of strong malts, caramel, toffee notes, mild nuts, syrupy notes and some ripe fruits. Flavor of sweet caramel malts, mild chocolate, oat and even rye notes, nuts and ripe fruits. A bit more like a smooth doppelbock than a imperial stout. Sweet and malty palate with a mild fruity finish. Quite surprising but definitely not bad.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jonno (1456) - JAPAN - JAN 25, 2012
Better than i expected. Lots of port and soy sauce, this is much more English than american. Reasonably rich and smooth. Not as roasty as many american Impy stouts this is more about the vinious like characters that the English versions excel at. Well put together.

Bottle at the brewpub on my Japanese stag. Filthy pitch with a flat, persistent tan lid. Burnt fudge, Black Jacks, burnt fennel seed, Neapolitan ice cream drizzled with black coffee aroma. Slick, burnt and smooth with bags of Black Jack, burnt toast scrapings, charcoal stirred in sugared black coffee. Smouldering toast finish. Bit heavy on the liquorice, but a pretty lip-smacking stout.

Thanks to Sean for this super rare tick... dark brown body with a watery tan head... the aroma sucks, body odor, generic plums, alcohol, terrible... the taste is terrible, light alcohol, prunes, ashy water... terrible

Bottle thanks to Mari and Steven for bringing this over the Pacific Ocean. Pours a pure black hue with a medium beige head. A really nice aroma of cocoa, dark fruit and oil can. The flavor is rich and easy; roasted malts, yeast, fizzy palate, cocoa and chocolate dominate, dry. Light fruit. Very nice. A long dry cocoa finish.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 KyotoLefty (3752) - Kyoto, JAPAN - JAN 8, 2009
Draught at GJBF, Osaka 2008. Special aged version. Said to be aged for 1 ½ years, and it tasted that way. Amazingly smooth, with mature, port-like aged tones. Strong, rich, and smoky. Medium sweetness with dark fruits, medium to strong roasted flavor. Excellent.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Capa (1633) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 25, 2008
Deep brown with just the edges showing light. This brew is topped with a mid size, rocky tan head. Lightly roasted, dark fruits, molasses, and heavy malts. Flavor is a bit lighter than I was expecting. Malty, roasted, some molasses, and a bit chalky in the finish. Hides the 9%. Solid. Earlier Rating: 9/16/2007 Total Score: 3.4 @ GJBF 2007. Light brown color with a thick head. Aroma is good, roasted malts, cocoa, caramel, dark fruits, but some grass was also in there which was a little distracting. Body was a little thin. Molasses, cocoa, sweet malts, roasted, raisins. Good stout, though a little lacking in the flavor.
