Wombata (456) - Kobe, JAPAN - SEP 4, 2014
2013 Bottle from CBB Aroma: Dusty wheat, mild mikan and pear, yeast Palate: Full-bodied. almost viscous, smooth mouth feel Flavor: Wheat, pear, guava, from start with addition of ripe mikan in the middle, finishing with bitter grain. Comment: Outstanding as the mouth feel and flavors evolved and it had long fruity, moderately bitter finish. 4.1 Day 2: Aroma: Floral, dusty wheat, pear, malt, neutral/Chard-like tropical fruit, light caramel Palate: Flavor: Wheat, mandarin orange, pear, tropical fruit, moderate bittering with lemon peel. Comment: This opened up like a full-bodied wine might. Worried that I had overrated it yesterday, but actually its even better with an aroma of 8 and an overall of 18 IMO. So, 42-43 points now. 2014 Version--same day at Enibru as the 2013 above. Aroma: Wheat, light mikan, pear, not very aromatic. Palate: Body has depth. Flavor: Wheat, moderately sweet pear, grain, mikan Comment: Moderately complex mix of fruit, wheat and grain flavors. Like a barley wine with lighter body and hop. Balanced, good sustained flavor though it verges on being mild at this point. 3-6-4+-8-16 = 37+. Bottle age does seem to improve this one.

330 ml from Tanakaya @ Mejiro. Pours hazy golden with a thin head. Has a thick and deep wheat aroma, a small hint of alcohol. Bananas, melon and bread dough. Taste is quite sweet that is balanced by spices and alcohol bitterness. Quite warming brew that leaves you with a dry tongue and a long lingering slightly bitter aftertaste. Good stuff.

9% courtesy of Chewy shared at CBB. A very cloudy straw gold, a very farmhouse smelling beer. Medium-bodied, spicy, fruity  with a bit of heat to it. Really nicely done.

(Rating #5192)

My Bottom Line :
Sweet candy and honey are licked by alcohol for a simple and efficient Wheat Wine.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A ring of foam circles the misty blond.
-This is rather low on the hops.
-This definitely lacks complexity for a brew this size. Then again, the dessert factor is quite high, if you are into the type of flavors it has to share.
-Carbonation is quite soft for the high level of residual sugars.
-I am even hallucinating heart-shaped cinnamon candy in here. Must be some weird combination of spicy phenols and my imagination. ;)

Bottle.

Bottle, thanks to Bruce. It pours cloudy golden orange with a small white head. The nose is apricot, peach, butternut squash and dough. The taste is earth, light spice, butternut squash, peach, apricot yoghurt and creaminess with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Good balance and decent flavour. Pretty nice.

Bottle @ Bruce’s. The pour’s light gold with a small head. The nose is herbs, some mandarin orange, pears. The taste is more of the same. Pears, grassy bitter herb. Some golden syrup. Medium body, soft on the palate. Overall, OK.

Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Thanks to Bruce for an all too rare Japanese tick. Hazy gold beer, little white head. Palate is softish and a little dry. Light creamy malt with light bretty citrus. Creamy malt finish. Hangs together well.

Bottle at Bruce’s, London. Big thanks to Bruce for bringing this back for his travels in the Far East. Pours cloudy yellow-gold with a fine, white foam head. Sweet doughy malt nose, hints of orange and lemon merengue. Huge sweet flavor, lots of white bread, some raw alcohol, light dry straw, dough. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish, some sticky white sugars, doughy white bread, a touch medicinal, hay. Not bad.
