April 2007: Brown 500ml bottle, purple label, can’t find a best before date on the bottle.
Poured into a Frankenheim Alt glass twice.
If there is a darker beer out there, I haven’t seen it, dense and black, with a small bubbled rich light brown foaming head.
Very strong burnt malt aroma, dark chocolate and treacle smells add to the malt, which gives the beer an over cooked chocolate cake aroma.
This beer is what it claims it is, a smooth and creamy Chocolate Stout.
This is what lets the beer down a little, it is watery for such a heavy looking and smelling stout.
I enjoyed this beer, a pity about the mouthfeel, but drank with some Belgian chocolates made with beer (as bought at the Zythos fest), which I did with the second bottle, it stood up very well.

[Daleside Brewery, Harrogate] Pours dark brown with a yellowish head. Nose has some faint chocolate and a bitterness. On the taste - chocolate malt hints only, not as chocolatey as others I’ve had in the past. Quite light in alcohol so taste is pretty thin, some coffee in the aftertaste, which finishes quite smooth. I don’t think the three malts are that well balanced – and it’s just not that chocolatey [04092008]

bottle 500 ml from S-market summer season saleEXP 30 09 09 murky black beige head lacing tickling carbonation dark roasted malts bitterness and sourness in aftertaste. Dash of dark chocolate or over aged bottle with wild yeast? Mouthfeel turns more Belgium than UK. Dry end I might give this second change

Bottle, purchased at Meenan’s in Dunedin. Pours a rich looking near-black with a very dense thick tan head that displays excellent retention and generates thick beautiful lace. Very fudgy aroma. Flavours of chocolate liqueur and underlying coffee. Sweet with a mildly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is incredibly silky and perfectly carbonated. Remarkable flavour and structure for a lower ABV beer. I thought this was much better than the majority of ratings I see here!
