7 December 2005, Bottled Best Before Nov 05: Dark brown clear colour with a small frothy head and minimal lacing. Aroma is of chocolatey malt and raisins. Roasted chocolate taste and a little bitter. Exceptionally smooth mouthfeel, very pleasant, almost velvety and low carbonation. Overall rather easy to drink.

Tasted from the bottle around use-by and poured, quite cool, into an English pint. Clear, deep brownish copper body with a thin, soapy tan head that left a little legs. Mellow, dusty cocoa and crumbly fudge nose with stronger pulped fruit wafts coming through after a few sniffs reminiscent of cherries, blackberries and zesty raspberries. Quite inviting. Instantly rich and smooth in the mouth on first sip. Full in body and soft in carbonation. Quite doughy, with dried zesty and spicy fruits blending well into a little smokiness and a lightly malty bitter back. Light hint of burnt sugars with the fruit added a little sweetness, but it was otherwise quite dry on the palate and finished off quite long and dominated by dark fruity malt tones. I quite liked this one, as I have with all of the Daleside beers. Simple, balanced and effective. Quite nice!!! (50cL, BBE Nov ’05)

Clear brown, small head. Bready aroma with some soft caramel. Pleasantly mellow palate, mostly malt with a bit of apply fruit. I wouldn’t call this "powerfully strong" as they declare, but it is tasty.

Bottle. Dark brown with minmal head. Quite malty with a delicate choclate edge. Raisins and dates perhaps. Low bitterness but enough to keep things in balance. Medium bodied. Three years ago I would have loved this for it’s heavy maltyness - now I just like it.

Deep ruby amber with a smallish beige head and brief lace. Malty and molasses malt with a touch of bandaid aroma. Nice medium chewy palate. Low pleasant sweet malt medium bitter hops start moving back to caramel and toffee sweet but not cloying finish. Lotsa nice character for a 5.3% ale.

Bottle. I am with imdownthepub on this beer. Mahogany colour with a cream head. Dark fruits and malt on nose (black cherry) good malty flavours with some chocolate but mostly caramel and nice hop to balance. Not too sweet for a beer of this strength and very nice indeed

Brown to dark amber color; creamy head. Malty aroma, and caramel. Strong caramel taste, with some hops, but too much caramel (bitter) to be good.

Clear deep reddy amber body with an off-white head and good trails of lacing. Excellent aroma - malts-roasted, plus fruity notes. Smooth medium body but thin mouthfeel, soft carbonation, raisin, soft sweet liquorice, pepper, maybe cinnamon, can’t find the chocolate that other raters mention but can see where they are coming from. This beer was drunk at just the right temperature, I only wish I had a proper thermometer so I could take a note at which temperature it was served at, for future reference.
