Bottle. Pours a dark brown. Reddish tinges down the side of the glass. Small tan coloured head. Great nose of rich malts, dark fruits and a little alcohol. Really good. Flavours unfortunately dont quite hold up to the nose. Sweet with light bitter finish. Thinnish mouthfeel.

A hoppy ale in aroma and to an extent in character but negated by its strength.

Hand pulled pint at a Spoons in Tamworth before a Grimsby Town night match on 27th March 2012. Ruby/mid-brown coloured brew with an off-white head of closely knit bubbles. Aroma was both malty and fruity. Taste wise: it was again malty and fruity, a drier hop bitterness comes late on the palate but this is a primary a malty brew. Body depth is good and the alcohol sits well within the whole feel.

How many dirty stinking apes does it take to throw a wrench in a bitter ale? Notes of chocolate and coffee, also looks like strong coffee. Nuts and raisins as well. Sweet flavor with caramel aftertaste. Very smooth, full bodied, and easy drinking. Needs more hopping, really more like a mild ale.

Clear nutty brown with a big beige head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel, nutty and dried fruit. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and moderate bitter finish. Oily. 050412

On cask at Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival. Dark ruby/brown ale with a small tan head. Smells malty, roasty and toasty. Tastes of cocoa biscuits with a little bit of raisin and peach. Not much bitterness, more a sweetness to the finish. Pleasant.

5.3% and not a bad beer but they have annoyed me immensely, if the monkey had been hanging I would have really enjoyed it but at the time I was too confused by the drivel on the label. The label on the back claims that the beer was named for an old legend (to do with my home town), en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_hanger but it is obviously not, it is named after a type of adjustable spanner and nothing to do with the legend. I can not see why they even bothered printing it.

Dark red-amber with a long lasting head and thick lace. Solid sweet caramel malt with overtones of sorghum molasses and biscuit. As it moves through the palate a smooth floral hop bittering provides a cleansing balance. At the finish, sweetness re-emerges. An excellent beer.
